Come November, we are fac- ing long, dark nights with the added risk that brings in terms of security for domes- tic and commercial prem- ises – and personal safety. It is a well-known fact that in times of economic hard- ship, crime inevitably rises. For many hardened ‘career’ criminals, it makes no differ- ence – but we have to face the fact that some ordinary peo- ple are being driven to crime in desperation. So what does the Government do? Unbe- lievably, it cuts back on our already under-manned police force (as well as our armed services). While the bank- ers are still wondering how to spend their huge bonuses, many police officers will be wondering why they bothered to join. So not only do we face a

long, dark and bitterly cold winter (dare I even mention energy price hikes here?) we also face the prospect of rising crime and worsening anti-so- cial behaviour. More than ever before, we

need the expertise of our lock- smiths and the wider security industry, to help secure our homes and businesses. Make no mistake, you and the ser- vices you provide, are much in demand so it is up to each business to ensure that the consumers know you and where you are, how to contact you, what advice, services and products you can provide. We have said before that no-one relishes taking advan- tage of a situation such as the August riots. But if you are in this business, then you have to be aware of every opportu- nity to promote your skills and expertise – using every means possible.

Are you relying on referrals

too much? Do you promote your business fully in the area you cover? Is your vehicle displaying

the right info? Do you have a well-designed website? If you have a shop window, is it stop- ping people in their tracks? Have you looked at how the local press in your area can help promote your business not just with advertising, but with editorials? Are your skills bang up to

date? Would your business benefit from any training courses? When did you last consider adding other strings to your bow? Are you fully aware of what your competi- tors are doing? It is important to re-evalu-

ate your business periodically, even more so in the crime-rid- den, rapidly changing times in which we live. It is also crucial to look after Locksmiths run

yourselves.

risks just by doing their jobs. Protecting yourself is as im- portant as the safety and se- curity of others. Stay safe.
