therapeutic riding... horses helping people ManeLine Pippa Hodge came to Ontario

Those who braved the cold and the rain to attend the Pippa Hodge clinic held at TEAD in May were treated to a day and a half packed with exceptional and professional insight on therapeutic riding. All participants would have liked to keep Pippa here in Ontario for good. Pippa brought many tangible resources with her including photos and slides of riders from her program in BC which she used to highlight her talk. Her focus for the clinic was teaching instructors to use meaning- ful activities that can provide measur- able results for students. All morn- ing on Saturday participants were shown wonderful toys and tools that can be used in lessons that don’t have to cost a fortune. She gave instruc- tors many tips on how to assess where a rider is currently, and how to use that assessment to determine

measurable improvement over a course of lessons. There was also discussion about how conformation of the horse impacts the riders, and how to use different horse traits to progress riders from stability to mobility. Participants were then put into groups to discuss the ‘ideal’ therapy horse before going to the arena to do conformation assess- ments on some of the horses on site. After lunch, participants headed back to the arena for a rider demon- stration. Pippa displayed many of the tips she had discussed in the morning, while providing many more as she worked with the rider. Then it was back to the classroom for more slides and discussion. This created an opportunity for instructors to ‘ask the expert’ and get Pippa’s input on any issues they experience with rid- ers at their centers.

Sunday morning began with a recap of the previous day and time for any ques- tions that may have come up overnight. Pippa then showed a few videos that demonstrated movement, and provided tips on how to keep therapy horses in good physical health. Then, it was back out to the arena to practice some rider stretches with the horses and a follow up discussion about general health and well being of therapy horses. Finally, we went back to wrap up in the classroom. OnTRA would like to extend heart- felt thanks to Pippa Hodge for coming to Ontario, and to the volunteers and orga- nizers from TEAD who provided a great venue for the clinic.
