Craig Cameron’s Extreme Cowboy Race At Outdoor Equine Expo
By Kelly Bowers
The Extreme Cowboy Race was originally created by Craig Cameron along with Ryan Dohrn of
HorseCity.com. Craig Cameron designed and has hosted five races at his Double Horn Ranch in Bluff Dale, Texas, since 2005.
HorseCity.com and Craig Cameron decided to name the event the Extreme Cowboy Race to chal- lenge typical reality TV shows with an infusion of horseback riding thrills. Each season Craig Cameron assembles an impressive roster of competitors from around the country
Craig Cameron and his Extreme Cowboy Race and thought, “Yikes! What have I signed up for?” Asked how she prepared for the chal- lenge, she explains “I set up some of the possible obstacles at home for us to practice (like the “curtain of trust” as we called it), borrowed a las- soo and tried catching stuff (like the compost bucket... which was a bad idea to do at the same time as texting as it turned out... We have a new bucket now).

Looking great really is... priceless!
When I found out that Craig likes to ask participants to whip off the saddle and hop on bareback, I figured I should learn how to pull it off with Mercy. It would have been pretty embarrassing not to be able to get on what I knew would be the smallest horse there. We felt a little out of place, to say the least, when I showed up in a dres- sage saddle with a helmet, on my prancey little Paso Fino stallion. I looked a mite silly in a sea of cowboys and cow- girls with horns on their sad- dles, big cowboy hats on their heads and enormous shiny champion buckles on their belts. Gulp.”

On Friday, about twenty horses did the preliminary round, mostly Quarter Hors- es, Paints and Appaloosas.
this again next year.”
One more question I had for her, How does it feel to be the partner of the all-round most versatile and amazing horse in ontario? Camilla answered honestly “As always, I am fantastically proud and grateful. Not a day goes by I don’t thank my lucky stars for having this horse in my life. We have such adventures together and he is a wonderful character and so much fun to be with. I also love how infectious his energy and enthusiasm is... So many people connect and respond to him that it feels like he has a wide circle of friends and fans. People pull for him because he’s so little, cute and super keen... how can you not?”
who compete for the title of Extreme Cowboy Race™ Champion. This summer, Craig brought his race to Ontario and Canadians were up to the challenge - and you will never guess who claimed first prize. Appaloosa stallion, Ima Patriotic Doc, and his rider, cowboy Lantz McLaren claimed second prize but it was our very own Camilla Willings and her amazing Paso FIno stallion, Mercenario, 2010 winners of the North American Wind Rider Cham- pionship.
Now how did she end up racing cowboys? “Well, I met a fellow at Can-Am that was handing out flyers for the Race and thought it sounded like a fun thing to try, and a com- pletely new experience for us. I mailed in an entry and then googled

The riders did a quick walk around the ring while Craig explained the course. Camilla was sure she’d forget it but suddenly it was time to rock and roll. The pace was fast and Craig’s commentary was both educational and enter- taining. Camilla describes his Texan expressions as hilari- ous! The top 12 were invited back for the finals, and Camilla was happy they were in the middle of that bunch. For Saturday, it was a new course and a blank slate for score. Camilla describes the event, “We did not have a perfect run but we had a blast, went super-fast and were surprised and thrilled to win. 5 of the top 6 were cowgirls (not boys), which was interesting. Ashley Bull (who came in 3rd place) and I agreed that the Wind Rider Challenge was great training for this event for teaching teamwork and trust (she won the WRC in 2009 before we won in 2010). The organizers of Canada’s Outdoor Equine Expo were all super-nice and helpful and did a great job. Hope they have
