CAMPING WEEKEND – August 27th and 28th 2011 We believe the social part of horse ownership is just as
important as the riding! Come for a camping weekend at the Tinmouth’s farm (3862 Wilcox Road, Orono) on Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th. There is plenty of space to paddock your horse, park your trailer and/or set up a tent. There will be a BBQ and evening entertainment on Satur- day night. “Slow” and “fast” paced rides will be guided on both Saturday and Sunday. Dogs are not allowed at this location. See
www.gfhc.ca for more details.

SKILLS RIDE – Saturday, September 10th 2011
A series of tasks or chal- lenges will be designed for horse and rider as they travel through the forest. This is a fun way to work with your horse
and is not a competitive event. See the website for location and start time.
COOL COLOURS RIDE – Sunday, October 2nd 2011 Traditionally, our final ride of the year has been the Cool Colours Ride – a lovely way to see the foliage changing in the forest and always a well attended event. Details will be posted on the web site by Sept. 1st.
NEW and EXCITING!!!
HALLOWEEN COSTUME RIDE – Sunday, October 31st 2011 - RSVP
Since many of our mem- bers continue to ride through November and December we thought it would be fun to add one later ride to our season. You can dress up in any cos- tume you like and/or you can dress up your horse! This is a new concept for the Club so please confirm your interest by sending an email to gfhc-
1@live.ca by Sept 30th if you would like to attend this event.

surfaces, explains Mays. Sides of buildings (inside and outside), stall surfaces and fences are all areas where flies can be found resting. Residual insecticides can provide fly control over a peri- od of time. Be sure to follow label recommendations for use, mixing and spraying.
“Sprays and dusts may be used to protect your horse, but these usually have short residual effect,” notes Mays. “Repel- lents containing DEET are better suited for mosquitoes rather than flies.”
The number of flies produced by a pair of stable flies and their offspring in the summer months is in the millions. There- fore, it is best to establish good fly control practices. A sound sanitation program is the first step needed to decrease stable fly populations at your horse facilities.
“It will take a combination of controls to decrease stable
fly numbers. You need to implement measures to decrease fly breeding and larvae hatching. Any stable flies that make it through these stages should be chemically controlled with residu- al insecticides and direct animal applications,” explains Mays. Knowledge of some basic stable fly facts in addition to good stable management practices will help you to have a win- ning chance against the pesky stable fly.

PADDOCK AND CANTEEN IN CENTRAL FOREST The GFHC has built and will maintain a paddock close to the Forest Centre so that riders can dismount, tie their horses in a safe enclosure and use the washrooms (yes, real plumb- ing!). There is also a Canteen open on weekends that serves very good food, hot drinks, cold drinks and desserts. These facil- ities are open to all riders and forest users – please make use of them. Before you leave the paddock we would appreciate you cleaning up any manure (fork and wheel barrow provid- ed) and make sure you leave everything as you found it.
SEE YOU IN THE GANNY!
