AUGUST 2011 THE RIDER /19 Whispering Hearts Grateful for Community Support By Kelly Bowers
Brenda McArthur and Dave Thompson would like to say “Thank You” for the generous donations and support for the Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue annual 2011 fundraiser held July 9th. The sun shone brightly, temperatures rose, and committed volunteers and supporters arrived throughout the day. A petting zoo and pony rides were a big hit as was horse petting plus yard and tack sale shop- ping. Dave and his helpers knew what they were doing behind the BBQ (sponsored by Nigh’s of Jarvis, Hagersville Foodland, & Lococos, the Mitchell and Hewson families). WHHR is thankful for all of it and much more.
Brenda and Dave are also very grateful for a generous $3,000 donation from Scotiabank in Sim- coe, topping last year’s gift of $2,000. Many businesses and indi- viduals also donated to the draw prize table, baking table, lawn and tack sales, and the BBQ again this year like Callaway Feeds (Flo- radale) who arrived with bags of shavings and bedding. 125 bales of donated hay were piled nearby thanks to Anderson Farms and 75 sponsors in all made the event a success. When numbers were crunched, the tally revealed over $9,000 in earnings.
All funds raised will help with the ongoing care and expense
of over fifty rescued horses in their care. In the past few years, thanks to the overwhelm- ing aid from the public, the pair have been able to build a quarantine area for new arrivals; added a new barn with five new stalls; fatten up hungry bodies; attend to feet and health issues; and heal physical and psy- chological wounds, nurturing lost souls. In fact, it takes the support of donors and vol- unteers to make sure the rescue survives. And there is always a need. Despite being filled to capacity, ten more horses have arrived in the last couple months. This brings the current number to 52, and there are many more on a waiting list.
On a happier note, many horses have been adopted to wonderful loving people already this year. Although it is difficult for Brenda and Dave to see a horse leave, every adoption makes room for another rescue, and that is what the rescue is there to do. well functioning hind gut is a source of nutrients for the rest of the body not only in calories but also in B vitamins, electrolytes and fluids,” says Vandenbrink while dis- cussing the importance of fibre. The partici- pants were given plenty of information to digest. Feedback from the workshop, con- clusively indicated horse owners are chomp- ing at the bit for more of this valuable infor- mation.
The evening of integrative therapies was made possible through a memorial con- tribution by family members of Rosalie Logan. This tribute honored a noted horse- woman and shared her love of the horse with other horse lovers. Rosalie believed an ounce of prevention was worth a pound of cure and Equine Guelph was pleased to facilitate this workshop. Equine Guelph thanks all attendees for their generous dona- tions which help to develop future educa- tional opportunities.
