TRAIL DEVELOPMENT ~ Ruth Pugh, along with St. Williams Reserve Community Council has been working for horse trails at St. Williams (Nursery Track) and Turkey Point Tract in Norfolk County. Ruth tells us there is about 3 hours of riding at St. Williams on recent- ly cleared trails and another 2+ hours at Turkey Point. Ruth and SWRCC are finalizing the trails at Turkey Point and OTRA has donated funds to help with getting a horse trailer friendly parking lot and hitching rails.

OEF Donates $10,000 to Equine Research

The Ontario Equestrian Federation (OEF) is pleased to announce that it has donated $10,000 to Equine Guelph to help continue the exemplary work conducted in the Research division.

Equine Guelph’s research division promotes the health and welfare of horses in Ontario by conducting research into diseases and common problems in horses and by communicating effectively the findings to the scientific communities and equine industry. Equine Guelph Research committee chair, Jeff Thomason comments, “equine research in Ontario is largely funded via the racing industry, so OEF’s contri- bution is an important step in the right direction to expand research on priority issues in the non-racing sec- tor. Health of the digestive system and heaves are exam- ples of two such priorities. He continues, “we are very pleased OEF will be contributing to two projects. One is a genetic survey of all microbes in the gut, to establish the prevalence of those beneficial for digestion com- pared to those which may play a role in some colics. The second is a study on the cellular mechanisms of heaves which will help improve strategies for prevention and treatment.”

“One of the OEF’s mandates is to support educa- tion,” states OEF President, Allan Ehrlick. “On behalf of our members, we feel that it is important to support research initiatives that will benefit horses everywhere.” The continued partnership between the OEF and Equine Guelph will help bring about new developments in equine health for all breeds and disciplines. For more information about the research studies being conducted please visit www.equineguelph.ca.
