AUGUST 2011 THE RIDER /3 Celebrating Equestrian’s Trail Blazers By Melissa Monardo, Ontario Equestrian Federation
Set back from the busy streets of Toronto’s east end, overlooking the Scarborough Bluffs, sits the Toronto Hunt Club. Although it is now a private golf course, the Toronto Hunt Club’s history is steeped in equestrian sport as it was once the meeting place for the city’s avid equestrians to gath- er and take part in fox hunts and gymkhanas.
ourary Trail Blazer. To clarify, we aren’t starting a trail riding club.”
The evening was dedicated to recognizing riders, trainers, officials, etc. that were involved in equestrian sport prior to 1972. Canada has experienced many successes in this sport over the last few years and it is important to take the time to remember those who paved the way for our current athletes – the Trail Blaz- ers.
The gracious hosts of the evening, Walter and Jacqueline Shanly and Mr. Elder, had bronze medallions specially made to commemorate the con- tributions made by each individ- ual. Mr. Elder presented each recipient with a medallion and
took the time to share personal anecdotes about each and every Trail Blazer that evening, albeit tales that many had hoped had been forgotten. Needless to say it brought on more laughs!

If it weren’t for individuals like the Shanly family and Jimmy Elder, many of our iconic equestrians would be forgotten. It’s important for us to know our sports history and take the time to identify and learn about those who ‘blazed the trail’ for the rest of us. The Ontario Equestrian Federation would like to give special thanks to Walter, Jacque- line and Jimmy for providing such a special and memorable evening.

On the evening of Friday April 22, 2011 the Hunt Club returned to its roots and opened its doors to Canada’s leg- endary equestrians. Seated in the original clubhouse, the painted hunt scenes that adorned the walls provided the per- fect setting for our legends to unite, dine and celebrate one another. The energy in the room was infectious as old friends greeted one another, reminisced and shared a laugh over each others’ caricatures that were illustrated as they came in. The night was only to be followed by more laughs as the evening’s emcee and renowned equestrian, Jimmy Elder start- ed the evening by joking, “I’m sure many of you were con- fused when you received your invitation to join us as an hon-
