AQHA Director’s Report From Kathy Patterson.

Did you know that Ameri- ca’s Horse, an AQHA news and information service, airs free on the Internet. Check out ‘americ- ashorsetv’ for interesting and up to date communications on all things related to the Quarter Horse industry.

America’s Horse Daily pre- sents a number reports that are free and easy to download as well as to share with your friends. Just two of general interest to all horse people are: How to make a Rope Halter and Horse Wound Care. Explore this site and I’m sure you will find many items of great interest. The fourth annual exhibit of American’s Horse in Art returns to the AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum on Saturday, August 13, with an (open to the public) reception. All 89 pieces by 33 world renowned Western artists will be for sale with funds raised going to support the museum. The signature piece for the 2011 show is a painting by renowned Western artist, Steve Devenyns, titled “An American

Icon”. I understand that limited edition prints of this special work will also be for sale. For further information or to purchase your favorite piece see the exhibit on line at quarterhorse museum.com. The show runs until November 13th.

Over the past few years there has been much work done by various committees of AQHA to present programs that will increase the number of entries at AQHA shows. Input has been sought and received from mem- bers and a task force, within the association, has made recom- mendations to the Show Council and the Show Committee. The AQHA Executive Committee has monitored this process very carefully and following their quarterly meeting (in July) there will be an official announcement as to how this new system will present a more fair and level playing field to encourage more participation at AQHA shows. I’m sure that when this Report is released by AQHA that you will be able to read it in full online and, of course, here in The Rider.

One trial initiative has been creation of ‘Rookie Shows’. There was a combination Novice/Rookie Show held in Carp Ontario on July 27/11. The numbers for this show are just in and total entries were 382, with 129 of those being in Rookie Classes. All in all a great suc- cess.

Most people would agree that the highest award a Quarter Horse Youth exhibitor can achieve is that of AQHA Youth Supreme Champion, and this designation is obtained only rarely. One of only two Youth, in the World, to accomplish this feat, in 2010, is Ontario’s own Rianna Storey.

Congratulations to Rianna, of Cambridge, Ontario on her receiving an AQHA Youth Supreme Championship with her mare Ima Raven Star. The team was awarded this high honor after attaining over 500 AQHA points in Youth Showmanship, Hunt Seat Equitation, Horseman- ship, Hunter Under Saddle, Per- formance Halter, Western Plea- sure, Halter, Reining, Pole Bend-

ing and Barrel Racing. She has also obtained an AQHA Cham- pion, Performance Champion and multiple Superiors as well as All-Around Youth titles with her horse, ‘Celeste’.

Horses are a way of life for Rianna and her family. Rianna’s mother Robyn is her coach and horse trainer and her father Randy also owns and operates a training facility in Ontario. A number of Ontario AQHA Youth members have geared up to head for the AQHYA Youth World Show in Oklahoma City, August 5-13. Good luck to them and their horses as they compete at this prestigious show. Brittany Lau- zon and One Hot Idea will par- ticipate in Performance Halter Geldings and Hunter Under Sad- dle. Rianna Storey along with Lopin In The Sky will compete in Showmanship at Halter, Hunter Under Saddle and Hunt Seat Equitation. Elizabeth Willsey and Gone Bar Huntin are entered in Showmanship at Halter, Trail and Hunt Seat Equi- tation. Exhibiting in Perfor-

mance Halter Mares, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equi- tation, Showmanship at Halter, Western Riding, and Western Horsemanship will be Stephanie Willsey along with Covered in Stars, A Krymsun Missle and Ima Moxie Man.

The AQHA has just con- firmed that the 20012 AQHA Youth World Cup will take place in Kreuth, Germany from July 21-29, 2012. The Canadian Quarter Horse Association has confirmed that it will field a ‘Team Canada’ for this event. Watch the CQHA website at: www.cqha.ca for upcoming information on qualifying as a Team Canada member, or to apply to be either Team Cana- da’s Coach or Team Canada’s Manager.

Many of our Ontario Quar- ter Horse members are aware of the fact that, Ken McLellan, one of our Past Presidents and a very popular horse show announcer is in the hospital dealing with some serious health issues. We join the rest of the membership in wishing Ken all the best and for

his speedy and complete recov- ery.

I must close on a sad note as I and my family send condo- lences out to Murray and Adele Matheson and their family on the loss of their oldest son, Allen. Adele served as OQHA office secretary from 2006 through to 2010 and Allen’s brother, Curtis, serves as OAQHA Treasurer and shows in the Amateur Division at Ontario Shows. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. If I can be of any assis- tance, please contact me at: Phone: (519) 345-2861, Fax: (519) 345-2742 or by e-mail tbrkathy@hsfx.ca.

36th Annual Teen Ranch Quarter Horse Shows By Ken McLellan.

Sun shone on the 36th Annual Teen Ranch Quarter Horse Shows set at the beautiful Teen Ranch in the Caledon Hills, Saturday and Sunday, June 18 & 19. This year was the first ever for a TRIPLE Judged format in Ontario. Ms. Cyndi Brown, Tx.; Ms. Jan Steffl, Tx and Mr. Dean Ross, Ab. were the judges. Just over 100 horses competed with close to 400 entries under each judge. The show was approved for OQHA and Area 3 Promotional Club Year End Points. The shows were co-hosted by Teen Ranch and The Ontario Quarter Horse Association.

Jamie Simpson, OQHA President; Jim Conod, OQHA Director; Tom Ramey, husband of OQHA 2nd Vice President; and Valerie Love, OQHA 1st Vice President kindly donated their services to OQHA. Pete Hammer was the show chairperson and along with a number of others took his place behind the BBQ at the Food Con- cession provided by the Ontario Amateur Quarter Horse Association. Shawna Crawford demonstrat- ed Eggs Flambé with a little “Pam” on the BBQ, Sunday morning. Corrie Ensom and Britt Stevens put a lot of work and effort into hosting the event along with the other staff at Teen Ranch and the 3rd generation of the Stevens’ family including Elly Ensom, Janet and Rachel Stevens with help from Ty Ensom, who made the award presenta- tions throughout the weekend. Corrie was just a “twinkle in her parents’ eyes” when the first Teen Ranch Quarter Show was held. It was great to see Mel Stevens, Founder of Teen Ranch and Tim and Corrie’s dad in good health welcoming the judges and ring stewards to Teen Ranch. Tim Stevens, Teen Ranch Executive Director worked late Satur- day night revitalizing the water tank to help with dust control on Sunday. Lynn Bradt and Cheryl Blagden were once again the show secretaries. Thanks to Debbie Pereira for her help with mark- ing the stalls.

The Ontario Amateur Quarter Horse Associa- tion would like to thank all the volunteers who helped with the food booth. Tim spoke on the reliability of 2 horses that he had over the years including a rope horse that he rode at Quarterama. “Blondie” was reliable most of the time”. However she was not working the rope very well and even less when his dad, Mel called the horse’s name and from the stands and she changed her focus to Mel. Tim spoke of the only thing that is totally reliable is death which every one is certain of and being pre- pared.
