SPN OCT 2010 HeatPumps

“We don’t have to have a sales pitch these days. There’s an understanding that a heat pump is an essential and effective way of heating a pool. All we are discussing now with the client is which brand“

BELOW: Calorex Pro-pac series heat pump for the commercial sector. Every one unit of energy put into a Calorex heat pump will produce five units of energy

The background of change for the heat pumps market has been set – keeping up with increase in demand yet meeting the Government’s increasing desire for high energy efficiency standards. Ironically, the greater demand for the products has come on the back of environmental concerns. The UK market faces new products from the Far East and China as well as new brands working hard to establish themselves from Europe.

They all know the market is expanding but they also know consumers are demanding lower prices and improved performances. There is a common belief that the UK market benefits from the best products, best technology and best service systems for heat pumps in Europe if not the world.

The ability to embrace the latest energy technology is not limited just to newly constructed indoor pools – especially when refurbishment work includes the replacement of a standard pool hall ventilation unit with a new Gemini, the latest generation of climate control systems from Heatstar. The Gemini offers a convenient one-box solution, easily adapted to a retrofit installation, to encompass renewable energy technologies and it contains ‘twin’ heat pumps – an integral fresh air source heat pump, in addition to the conventional dehumidification heat pump. Uniquely, the Gemini heat pump is able to place the energy absorbed from the outside fresh air directly into both the swimming pool water (at 29°C) and pool room air (at 30°C), therefore maximising the coefficient of performance (COP) possible and avoiding any requirement for separate domestic type heat pumps or the complexity of hot water storage buffer tanks etc. Unlike domestic heat pumps, the Gemini will also cope with the large sudden heat loads associated with indoor pools, for example when the pool water is initially heated from cold or when the air needs to be rapidly boosted from the ‘set back’ temperature, utilising LPHW heat exchangers and cleaver sequential temperature control circuits to ensure optimum energy efficiency is always maintained.

The Gemini also utilises special digital ‘low energy’ fan motor technology, which ensures that the fan power consumption and ventilation rates are automatically reduced during the frequent

periods when, say, a domestic pool is not in use and demand is minimal.

The Gemini system is a major hit with refurbishment clients. On one recent retrofit project the client was quick to observe that his previous high consumption of heating oil all but stopped overnight when the Gemini was switched on and has subsequently offered the view that he considers the Gemini machine to be “fabulous”! All Heatstar units come with a fully supported warranty and maintenance package. Heatstar also offer a free computer-aided system design facility and invite potential customers to contact them for a detailed analysis of needs for individual projects.

O2 Heatpumps place in the market has been lifted by the eco7’s product – the only heat pump in their class to feature filter pump control – allowing the pool to be kept at a stable temperature without the filter pump running 24/7.

Boasting brand name components such as Hitachi, Panasonic and Sanyo, titanium heat exchanger and galvanised epoxy coated cabinet, eco7 heat pumps require little or no maintenance and have ‘Soft Start’ as standard.

“We’re really proud of our eco7 range”, said Steve Edwards, Director of O2 Heatpumps. “We’ve been developing our machines in Europe for over five years, and we’re confident that you won’t find a better product for the same price. But pool owners still need to ensure that the right product is correctly sized to any pool requirements – taking into account the pool size, cover and swimming season.

O2 Heatpumps have four differently sized machines in the eco7 range designed for spa or pool requirements; with the larger three all coming complete with their own cover to protect them during the winter season.

As well as the environmentally-friendly Calorex ‘Heatseeker’ air source and ground source heat pumps, designed specifically for the domestic swimming pool market, Golden Coast also supplies a range of conventional commercial systems to ensure the water temperature of swimming pools are maintained at the correct level.

New this year for the commercial sector is the Calorex ‘Pro-Pac’, a range of outdoor air-to-water heat pumps ranging in size from 43kW to
