FACTSHEETS KEY TO UNDERSTANDING WAVE OF NEW LEGISLATION

BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes looks ahead to a busy autumn helping members deal with new legislation and preparing for SPATEX next February

to provide their respective members with relevant and timely advice. Some of the factsheets have technical content, such as Building Regulations Part L, while others highlight beneficial services such as Foreign Exchange opportunities that should save members money if they use these types of transactions. In this issue there is a

S

feature on SGM F-X who provide foreign exchange services and how they can potentially offer a valuable service for members. With a variety of legislation due to impact on our industry, such as swimming pool insulation as part of the Building Regulations and water conservation issues during hosepipe bans, the BSPF is working with the key government departments and other agencies to ensure we represent the views of our industry. Once the legislation is passed and the effect on our members known, additional or updated factsheets will be produced. PIP, under the chairmanship of Jamie Adams, has been busy liaising with Go Publishing and BOTTLE PR to continue to raise the profile of our industry to the various market sectors. More information about the progress being made with the trade and consumer audience is included in ‘Pipeline’ on page 28. BISHTA is growing concerned at the number of complaints it is receiving from consumers who have been dealing with the Trade Price Group and is liaising with a consumer group representing over 60 people affected by this company. It is vital for the credibility of our industry that we all work hard to provide consumers with a great experience and if there are consumers

ince the last issue of SPN, both BISHTA and SPATA have been developing a range of member factsheets

who feel they have been let down by this, or any other company, we need to signpost them to Consumer Direct, if they cannot get a satisfactory response from the company concerned. The AGM’s for BISHTA, BSPF and SPATA are set to take place on 14 September in Andover, to provide members with a great opportunity to visit the office and pick up a range of materials being prepared for the event. In addition to being able to meet the staff behind the scenes of our trade associations and a great opportunity to network with your peers, the day will also give members the platform to find out what is being done to help them, raise questions and offer their ideas on how we can continue to develop and strengthen the Trade Associations, by helping the members. Guest speakers are Dave Gammon from Action Coach, exploring ways of maximising your business (for BISHTA members) and on how to generate and retain more customers (for SPATA members) and Tim Colman will be speaking to SPATA members and an article from him appears on page 31. Preparations are in full swing for the SPATA and BISHTA Awards in February 2011 and you can read more about SPATEX on pages 26 and 27.

Right now we are busy researching the history of each of the Trade Associations – SPATA will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and BISHTA its tenth. There is still time for members to enter the relevant awards – the deadline is Friday 5th November. A number of sponsors have indicated they are willing to support the event and the full list of companies will be acknowledged in the next SPN. The awards once again promise to be a memorable night on the industry calendar and tickets are already on sale for just £67.50 + VAT. Dates for SPATA seminars at Loughborough University Tuesday 23 November and University of Surrey in Guildford Tuesday 30 November have now been set. The seminars will run from 11am – 3.30pm and with the changes introduced this year by the Coalition Government and VAT due to change in January 2011, it has been decided to offer a range of financial and taxation sessions for members to benefit from. Plans are also underway to offer a brief tour of the facilities at the universities, including their respective 50 metre pools. Finally, it is important that the Pool & Spa Industry pages within SPN reflect what the membership wants to read about, therefore your comments, feedback and questions are always welcome. Each of the organisations will continue to respond to member requests for further information from SPATA and BISHTA and we plan to start running features on our members and their businesses.

We will also be setting aside some additional space where we can offer advice and answers to the increasing number of frequently asked questions.
