SWIM SCHEMES ON OFFER

A number of local authorities are trying to put together schemes to replace the abandoned Government free swimming scheme. The 9,000 people who signed up to the Wokingham popular scheme initiative have been told they can take advantage of a special offer at Wokingham Borough Council’s leisure centres.

The scheme, which was open to over 60s and under 16s, ran for more than 18 months. The pools are offering swims at £2 per session for the people who registered for the scheme. Tony Penge, Contract Manager for Leisure Connection, which operates the council’s leisure centres, said: “We hope our customers continue to enjoy the benefits of swimming as part of their everyday lifestyle.”

POOL OWNERS FEEL WARM ABOUT GOING ‘GREEN’

With pool owners recognising the need to save energy and, thereby, money, recent projects have used the Sunburst swimming pool solar heating system from Golden Coast. In Marsham, Norfolk, Olympic Pools installed a solar collector system on two sides of a roof of an adjacent building to gain maximum exposure to the sun. It will provide the only heating source for a new- build 40ft x 20ft block and liner outdoor pool incorporating two hopper deep-ends with a middle shallow section.

In Somerset near Bath, Deep Blue Pool Management also installed a Golden Coast Sunburst system, this time for an existing 38ft x 16ft indoor domestic pool to substitute the use of the conventional oil boiler from May to September. In the winter, the solar system will be used as a secondary heat source to the boiler. The six solar panels, each holding 30 collector tubes, were installed on the south-facing roof of the pool hall. As in the Marsham project, the Sunburst system was installed at the end of last year’s season, making this the first year that it will be used as a prime heating source during the summer.

“More of our customers are looking to go down the ‘green’ route and enquiries are increasing for solar and heat pump systems to replace

or supplement the more conventional pool heating systems,” said Paul Zeitzen of Deep Blue Pool Management.

A similar project on an existing outdoor pool was undertaken by GVS of Solihull for a customer in Lapworth, Warwickshire, with a 38 square metre kidney-shaped pool previously heated solely by a conventional oil boiler. The boiler will now be used as required in conjunction with the solar system. The project required the installation of five Sunburst solar panels, each holding 30 collector tubes, mounted in two sets, with three on a south facing and two on a south-west facing roof of a former barn, about 20 metres away from the plant room. “During last year the Sunburst

system heated the pool using ‘free energy’, enabling extended use of the pool by the family beyond the height of summer,” said Keith Cooper of GVS.

Marlborough-based Light & Land Energy has installed the first Sunburst system supplied by Golden Coast simply for heating a domestic water supply unconnected to a swimming pool.

The project

required installing a 30 collector tube unit onto the roof of a 300-year old cottage situated in a conservation area in North Devon.
