number of years. T

As usual there’s expectations of new products, innovations, fresh ideas and new opportunities but this year there’s something about the main exhibitions which start in Lyon in mid November and end in Brighton with SPATEX in early February which there hasn’t been for a while. It’s the realistic hope that for the first time in five years the shows will open against a background of business which is growing and trades all around Europe which are expanding. In France for example where, UK trade take note, they are able to produce exemplary information and statistics about their industry, which shows recorded 39% growth in the last quarter of 2009, 15% in the first quarter and 26% in the second quarter of 2010. Germany reports ‘more than 20% growth‘, Spain, perhaps hardest hit of all the European markets have just in early September produced 2010 statistics which show the best sales of new swimming pools since 2006. In the United States there’s optimism on the back of recovering hot

tub sales and what the APSP, the country’s leading trade association say is exciting growth at the top end of the market and amongst first time pool owners.

In the UK we are left to make a valued judgment by talking to specialist companies. The picture is mixed but more seem confident and happier than for a long while. Hot tub sales are strong and the most common words you hear from the trade in general is ‘we’re very busy’.

So the question ahead of the gathering of trade industry buyers, exhibitors, visitors and press in Lyons, Las Vegas and Brighton will be ‘Is the worst over?’

he season of trade shows is almost here and while there’s nothing new in that, the 2010 and 2011 season promises something which hasn’t been true for a

The wellness market is still at the heart of all the present and future growth – spas, saunas, steam rooms, showers are all set to go on expanding at private and commercial level. Bill Gilchrest an industry trade guru told a recent meeting of pool professionals in the United States: “This winter is I think perhaps the most critical for many. There are clear signs of genuine consumer interest in our products at a time when money is tight. That has to be good news. We all know it’s possible to talk ourselves into another recession but equally we can talk things up and see that the trade is getting healthier and better on the back of some great, great products.”

Those promoting Piscine 2010 in Lyon say it is a ‘barometer’ of the industry and for once the hype is justified. It is a crucial four days because it will reflect what the trade can look forward to in 2011. Just as Las Vegas will for the US market and SPATEX for the trade in Britain.

They are all shows which promise to be special.
