POLYPOOL GOES UNDERGROUND WITH HEAT CONSERVATION

Indoor swimming pools, featuring the latest heat-retaining panel technology from Polypool, are part of underground leisure suites in a new residential development by Southacres in Surrey. The Phillamores is a collection of three luxury properties in Cobham, each with their own entertainment complex in the basement that includes a 9m x 4m pool, gym and home cinema. Polypool designed and built heated swimming pools for each new home, including environmental controls, with it’s pioneering system because it offers ease of installation, minimal running costs, and advanced heat conservation to rival any traditionally built concrete or block swimming pool.”

Polypool’s thermal panel structure creates a fully insulated pool shell with a U-value (potential for heat loss) of 0.018W/m2K - well below the maximum 0.025W/m2K required under new Part L Building Regulations due to come into force in October 2010. Panels are factory fabricated to size to suit the individual pool dimensions and include high efficiency polyurethane between two facing skins. Polypool’s patented pool

system retains up to 96% of heat that would normally be lost through the pool walls and floor using traditional construction methods. Polypool provided a total package for the Phillamores including a complete environmental pool system providing effective dehumidification, heat recovery and heating of air and pool water. The pools use a natural oxygen purification process that eliminates the need for cleaning chemicals such as chlorine or bromine. The environmentally friendly system keeps the water safe and clean, and

the toxic-free backwash water can be recycled for washing the car or watering plants.

Polypool recommended a ‘liquid’ pool cover with minimal visual impact to save energy on water heating and control humidity. The innovative system consists of a bio- degradable liquid which is lighter than water and forms a thin, transparent layer over the surface of the pool.

Swimming’s governing body the ASA has issued new guidance to advise swimming clubs and pools how to deal with the world of social networking from a child safeguarding point of view. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter and video-sharing sites like You Tube provide opportunities

SWIM CLUBS GET ADVICE ON SOCIAL NETWORK SITES ABERDEEN POOLS FACE CLOSURE

but they are accompanied by dangers and negative consequences if abused by users. This is why the ASA has published the Good Practice Guidelines on the use of Social Networking Sites by ASA Clubs and Club Members. The purpose of this guidance is to provide a recommendation of best practice to all ASA club members and parents on the use of social networking sites as they relate to that individual’s role in the ASA club. The ASA has also produced a specific guide for Twitter. The Parents’ Guide to Twitter. It explains what Twitter is, how to set up an account and how to use it. It should be read in conjunction with the Wavepower guidance on using social networks.

Swimming pools in Aberdeen could face closure as part of local authority cost-cutting measures. Aberdeen City Council is planning to “review” the future of several public pools. The proposal comes after long-awaited plans for an Olympic- sized facility were lodged. In May, council officials were asked to find almost £1m to repair Tullos pool, which temporarily closed two years ago – but it has now been confirmed there is no spare money in the council’s budgets.

Before making a decision on whether to close the pool at Torry, the officers have instead asked for a major review of all the city’s publicly- owned pools.
