SPN OCT 2010 WinterShutdown

permanent solution, the installation of a pool enclosure also improves safety and security, and extends the swimming season.

“It is so important to take action in autumn for two reasons,” explains Mark Ramsden of Complete Pool Controls.

“Firstly, algae and stain prevention is more cost effective than a spring cure, and will also mean it will be quicker to get the pool ready next year. Secondly, as the temperature falls, the pH will become lower, so it is prudent to raise the level.” Complete Pool Controls recommends two different treatments to its customers. “It is quite simple – all that is needed is a sequesterant to help resist leaf/metal staining during winter,” continues Ramsden.

“Winterisers generally fall into two categories –

polyquats and copper products. The former generally have wider compatibility and can be blended with useful sequesterants. Copper is usually a standalone product. It is more pH sensitive and cannot be used with biguanide and some other systems.”

Chemicals are still the most obvious ways to winterise a swimming pool, giving specialist pool retailers an opportunity to boost sales at what can be a slow time of year. A number of companies have their own check lists for preparation for winter. CPC add that there are some simple procedures that will ensure pool equipment protection and maximise water conditions for spring commissioning. They include lowering the water level in the pool so it is approximately 150mm – 200mm below the skimmer mouth opening in the pool. CPC suggests adding a 10mg/l (ppm) chlorine shock dose to the pool using their Blue Horizons Granular Shock, Rapid Shock or Shock ‘n’ Floc. Swimming pool specialists Golden Coast has its own ‘Check List’ for pool owners to ensure the pool and supporting systems are prepared for the winter shut-down: • The water should be tested and balanced, after which any Swimmer granular chlorine products can be applied to shock dose the pool.

• Empty the skimmer and pump baskets and apply Swimmer ‘Filter Cleaner’, that cleans the sand media to remove grease, oils and dirt accumulated during the season.

• Treat the water with Swimmer ‘Wintertime Algaecide’, either in its standard form or copper-free, which is specially formulated to inhibit the growth of algae during the winter months.

• Ensure the pool has a good quality cover to help keep debris out. Golden Coast offers two winter debris covers, the Swimmer ‘Classic’ and ‘Superweb’.

There are a wide range of companies, who are active in this sector, and can also provide advice and information to pool owners on this issue. “A good debris cover will help keep the water clean over the winter months,” explains Mandy Kelsey of Summit Leisure. “However, a safety cover can provide peace of mind for the owner. Not only will it keep out unwanted vermin and wildlife, more importantly, it will make the area safe for children.”

The Walu cover from Certikin provides three covers for the price of one: installing one of these means you can dispense with a solar bubble cover and its reel system, a winter cover and all other safety systems.

First it is a safety cover. Manufactured to the stringent French NF p90-308 safety standard and comfortably holding a weight of 100kg, the Walu offers solar and heat retention benefits and acts as a first class winter cover. Unlike other safety covers, where the whole system needs to be replaced if it should become damaged, all individual parts on the Walu cover are replaceable. The cover’s panels and anodised aluminium tubes are interchangeable and so can be replaced, if necessary, and on site so, you never have to be without your pool safety system.

Covrex from Fairlocks is new to the UK market for 2010 and the differences between it and other slatted pool covers are numerous. Conceptual and intelligent the systems consist of high-quality PVC slats specially developed for use in both outdoor and indoor pool applications. The slats are co-extruded and integrally bonded with hinges made of polyurethane. The cross-section design permits tight coiling radii making Covrex systems compact and space saving so ideal for retrofitting as well as faultless initial installations. An enclosure allows the season to be extended throughout the year, and gets rid of the need to
