Section 1.
Reading a map
Start by getting more familiar with a topographic map. Explore how to read the contour lines and
elevation of a topographic map.

Finding places with latitude and longitude
You are now going to work with an actual map that Tema GoNorth! is using on the expedition trail.
By looking at the map outtake on the next page identify the following places:
A couple of hints before you get going: The top of this map is at 77˚ 00’ N. The bottom of the map
(which you can not see) is at 76˚ 00’ N. The number 30 in the right side—that is at 76˚ 30’ N.
Also, the word “Gletscher” is Danish and it means glacier. The word “bugt” means bay.
a. What glacier are you standing on when you are at 76˚59’ N, 68˚ 00’W ?
b. Are on land or water when you are standing at 76˚42’ N, 68˚ 40’W ?
c. What bay are you standing by when here 76˚32’ N, 69˚ 00’W ?
