TSCRA Leaders Meet New Texas Congressman T
SCRA FIRST VICE PRESIDENT RICHARD Thorpe and Director Arthur Uhl
had the opportunity recently to meet with U.S. Representative-elect Will Hurd, Texas District 23, to discuss issues important to cattle raisers and landowners. Hurd took offi ce in January, rep-
resenting a 29-county area stretching from San Antonio to El Paso and south to the Rio Grande. We appreciate Rep. Hurd’s support of TSCRA and look forward to working with him in the days to come.

TCFA, Texas Beef Council Join USMEF on Overseas Market Development Trip

ATTLE INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP TRAVELED TO ASIA IN DECEMBER to explore new market opportunities for U.S. beef
and Texas barbecue. Hosted by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) and led by Vice President Greg Hanes, trip participants included Chairman Tom McDonald and CEO Ross Wilson of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Texas Beef Council Executive Committee Member Austin Brown III, and Senior Manager of Beef Quality & Exports Jason Bagley. Brown is also a director of Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. The Texas Beef Council and Beef Promotion Research
Council of Texas (BPRCT) strongly support growing beef demand abroad. This year alone, BPRCT has com- mitted to investing $1.1 million in USMEF to help en- sure export market opportunities continue to expand. The purpose of the Asian trip was to see the mar-
ket fi rsthand and experience some of the checkoff- funded programs taking place. Attendees visited with

customers such as im- porters, distributors and foodservice groups, al- lowing insight into how programs will be devel- oped in the future and how the “Texas” brand can be leveraged to help increase beef demand. Several meetings were held in major cities along

the way, including Tokyo, where the group met with representatives from the Japanese Barbecue Associa- tion, Nippon Ham, Japan’s largest meat importer, and U.S. beef packing country representatives. The group also participated in a dinner hosted by
a popular Japanese TV personality, attended by an audience of 50 bloggers who were eager to witness a cooking demonstration and hear about the quality of U.S. beef. The group also attended a dinner meeting
