Book Dedication Recognizes Honorary Director Cartwright and Family
The leaders of Wildlife in Focus have dedicated
their most recent book to Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association Honorary Director Lon Cartwright, Dinero, and his family, to honor their lifelong dedication to preserving the ranchlands of Texas. In 2000, Coastal Bend ranchers and conserva-
tionists became concerned about the loss of ranch- lands and wildlife habitat in our area. They formed a group dedicated to educating the public, and children in particular, about the need to preserve our wildlife habitats. They decided to hold a professional photography contest and publish a book
of the award winning photos to show the diversity and beauty of the Coastal Bend area. The book was an immediate hit throughout the state and was a launch pad for education programs that continue today. Kritters 4 Kids (K4K) was launched in 2005, boasting a brand new accredi-
tation from the Texas Education Agency, to get the curriculum and sets of books into classrooms across South Texas. The mission of K4K is to educate kids about the fl ora, fauna and their habitats in their own back yards. It is a point of pride that no school has ever paid to get the curriculum. Each classroom set has been privately sponsored.
Lon Cartwright Beyond the schoolroom, K4K
camps have been held over the years to get the kids outside to see these magnifi cent creatures in their native habitats. Nature journals are made by participants so that they can remem- ber the experience and, it is hoped, carry it forward. Each of our books has been dedi-
cated to someone special. Book VII - Wondrous Wildlife is dedicated to Lon Cartwright and his family for their outstanding contributions and efforts toward preservation of wildlife habitats in Texas. Thanks to conser- vationists like the Cartwright family and Lon in particular, South Texas wildlife continues to thrive.
