TECHNOLOGY CENTRES

JOBS AND COMMERCIAL LICENCES FROM MCCI

Member companies of the Microelectronic Circuits Centre Ireland (MCCI) have announced 500 jobs in the past three years, 120 of which have been linked to the centre, according to director Mark Barry.

“After being set up in 2010, MCCI is already creating impact with three commercial intellectual property licences to Irish-based companies – the first is for ultra high definition multimedia cables, the second for car radar collision detection and blood glucose measurement, and the third is for wireless communications.

“Over 50pc of staff on completed projects have transferred into industry to help with the skills deficit in the sector.

“We have grown total funding of €2.4m per annum, including industry and non-Exchequer funding, to build a team of 30 researchers in an area of high interest to industry. As a result we have grown to 23 industry members.”

Among the technologies being developed at MCCI is the world’s first single chip phased array radiometer for early cancer detection and the world’s fastest transceiver for ultra fast fibre broadband to the home.
