Prices rise as spring approaches
Initial demand for used motorcycles was reasonably strong at the beginning of the year, though this dropped off sharply towards the end of January. Just over half of all respondents to our survey stated that demand was lower compared with the same period last year. The remainder said demand was unchanged. None reported an increase. Regarding stocks of used
motorcycles, 43 per cent stated that their stocks were lower than last year, while the rest confirmed stock levels remained the same. Looking forward, 57 per cent of
respondents stated that their used stocks were too low for anticipated demand. No retailers considered stocks to be too high. It was also widely reported that sourcing of retail quality used motorcycles is becoming increasingly difficult. While March and especially April

sales can be expected to generate an increased inflow of part-exchanges, even that additional volume may not fulfill immediate demand for fresh used stock. Dealers appear keen for most types of machines, especially those retailing at below the key price points of £2999 and £4999. The jury is still out regarding supersports models and the majority of feedback indicates soft demand and a generally weak market. On the other hand, a few in the trade state confidently that, once the sun starts shining and the roads dry out, the reduced numbers of those machines now available will result in transaction prices firming up. No doubt time will tell. To reflect the current situation and anticipated developments in the motorcycle market, Guide values have seen a modest uplift across most sectors for this March edition.

The Bike Trader website attracted a total of 52.3 million searches in 2012, up nine per cent on 2011. Of them, 33 per cent were received via a mobile device. Adventure bikes might be selling well in dealer
showrooms but, based on the searches in 2012, there is still an appetite for sportsbikes. The top four searches were dominated by this type of machine. It’s not surprising that the BMW R1200 is in the
top ten. It is one of the best selling new bikes and many of our visitors are keen to get their hands on a used one at a lower price. Dan Tye, Bike Trader editor
JANUARY 2013: DOWN 14 PER CENT
All capacity classes down Honda CRF250 blazes trail Triumph’s head start Adventure sport falls 28 per cent
It’s no surprise that January registrations were depressed. The damage was 14 per cent, down from 4759 units in January 2012 to 4092. An obvious factor affecting sales
was the snow and freezing weather which hit many parts of the country for several days. There was also uncertainty over the new 19 January Third Driving Licence Directive rules. Many potential new bike buyers will need time to understand the rules before they can decide which bikes best suit their needs.
FOUR-WHEEL OPPOSITION Then there is the car world. The two-wheel world faces fierce opposition from the box on wheels because the modern breed of light car is so fuel-efficient. Many are also very competitively priced, and some manufacturers are offering years of ‘free’ insurance and servicing. It’s a tempting come-on, especially in the depths of winter, and especially for parents, most of whom would rather see sons and daughters wearing a full metal overcoat on the road. Here are a few car stats to illustrate
the strength of the opposition. Car sales were up 11.5 per cent in
January to 143,643 units. Last year total car sales were up by 5.3 per cent to 2.04 million units. In 2012 the Ford Fiesta sold 109,265 units – more than the total sales for all road registered bikes in the UK last year (93,667 units). While the bike world is fighting back with what you might term sensible all-rounders and budget commuters, the four-wheel world made another move with the introduction of the £6000 Dacia Sandero from Romania in January. This is billed as the UK’s cheapest car. But back to bikes and the weather. In January, snow slowed moped
sales by 17 per cent, and bikes and scooters by 13.4 per cent. There is no point in labouring this point, because
what else could the industry expect under such conditions.
THE TRAIL BLAZERS On the encouraging side of the sales coin, the trail/enduro sector was up by 29.9 per cent, the biggest gainer (excluding unspecifieds) to 378 units (291 units January 2012). Best seller was the CRF250L Honda (49 units). This model was also best seller in the 126-650cc capacity sector. Many members of the industry see
growth potential from 250cc sector machines, and the Honda is showing the way. It has been the trail sector leader for the past six months solid, and surely is an indicator that thanks to the success of the adventure sport market, the all-terrain look is in.
PULSE TOPS ADVENTURE SPORT Talking of adventure sport, domain of mighty BMWs and Triumphs, January favoured the rather humbler Pulse XF125 Adrenaline as sector leader (31 units sold). The adventure sport sector was
significantly, and uncharacteristically, down – by 28 per cent to 398 registrations. The big adventure bikes were left to fight for honours in the over-1000cc capacity sector, the BMW R1200GS and Triumph Tiger Sport 1050 calling it a draw at 24 sales each.
TRIUMPH HEAD START Triumph road bike registrations proved an ace card in January, the British manufacturer registering 303 units, up 65 on January 2012. The Street Triple R accounted for 41 of these. Triumph was the only manufacturer appearing in the Manufacturer Top Ten table to show gain in both January 2012 and 2013. So at least one manufacturer made a head start in January. More details on Triumph performance on page 16. No firm conclusions can be
drawn from the January sales chart, whose statistical picture may be further clouded by new year pre- registrations. What is clear, however, is that the sun needs to shine in 2013 to heat sales up.
