SMS INC. research shows that dedicated distance measuring devices are being better utilised by European golfers than smartphone GPS apps

ccording to European consumer research carried out by SPORTS MARKETING
SURVEYS INC., the UK led the way in Europe in terms of awareness of different types of distance measuring devices in 2012, and also in the number of users of ‘dedicated handheld GPS units’, which out-numbered the use of Smartphone GPS apps. It was a different story in France, Germany and Scandinavia last year however, where SMS INC. research shows that Smartphone GPS apps were most used.
ONLINE AMBUSH SMS INC. European consumer research shows that in 2012, more core golfers bought DMDs online than from other retail outlets, although in France, off-course retailers led the sale of DMDs.
There is evidence to suggest
that for the serious golfer, who is determined to extract maximum course management benefit from their
DMD, the dedicated handheld GPS or laser rangefinder is the way forward, as smartphone GPS apps rank as the least frequently used version of distance measuring device. In the UK in 2012, SMS INC. research shows that 28% of golfers who own a smartphone GPS app rarely actually use it, while German golfers seem most reluctant to break traditional golfing etiquette and use their smartphones on the golf course: an overwhelming 82% of German golfers who own a smartphone GPS app rarely use it.
