he R&A’s proposed ban on anchored putting will be felt much more at professional
level than it will be at amateur. SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. research found that only 2% of golfers in the UK used a long putter in 2012, and some of that 2% would not have been anchoring.
Meanwhile, TaylorMade reported that 30% of PGA Tour golfers used high-stability mallet putters last year, whether anchored or not, and so the anchoring ban is only going to accelerate the rise of the mallet, among professional and amateur ranks. If anything, the anchoring ban could give the golf trade a fi llip, as
the small number of club golfers who have been anchoring their stroke might be in the market for a new putter.
SMS INC. research among core
European golfers in 2012 shows that when purchasing a putter, the most infl uential factor among golfers was the ‘Feel off the club face’.
