G-Mac by Kartel, the golf apparel collaboration between Dublin brand Kartel and Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell, is entering its second year with an expanded range

K

artel has launched the Spring Summer 2013 G-Mac by Kartel range, created in collaboration

with Irish Ryder Cup star Graeme McDowell. With styling the company describes as ‘modern vintage’, the collection comprises new polos, knitwear and trousers. “G-Mac by Kartel has a modern,

vintage look that is stylish, sophisticated and elegant,” says McDowell, 33, a Tour winner seven times to date, including the 2010 US Open. “It uses only the most luxurious yarns and fabrics, while still delivering cutting-edge technical attributes that are required to compete at the top level and in the most extreme climates. We have put a lot of thought and effort into it.”

The 2013 range features an extensive line of polo shirts, including the Dunluce, with a herringbone jacquard design and a subtle contrast placket, while the Galgorm is made from a premium blend of Pima cotton and Dry Tec polyester, with tailored stitching on the collar. Real attention to detail from G-Mac

by Kartel continues with the knitwear, in items such as the McButton, which is a five-button cardigan made from a soſt and luxurious cashmere blend. “G-Mac by Kartel is all about me

playing to my strengths and harnessing my experiences as a player to create a range that I would want to wear on and off the course,” adds McDowell. www.gmacbykartel.com

“Win or die” T

he G-Mac by Kartel brand has cleverly

reached back into the mists of centuries long since past, and polished up the coat of arms of McDowell’s ancestors (pictured), the McDougalls of Scotland. A bit like McDowell in the Ryder Cup, it seems the McDougalls were a clan that would not have taken too kindly to having their kilts ruffled. “The G-Mac by

Kartel brand has been inspired by the roots and ancestry of my family, the McDowells,” explains McDowell. “My ancestors were originally the McDougalls, a proud warrior clan who were the princes of Galloway in Scotland. “Our family coat of arms still resonates with the McDowells

to this day. The helmet is the symbol of the warrior; the oak leaf and acorn symbolise the strength of the mighty oak; and the lion’s paw holding a short dagger is a critical reference to the powerful arm and superior skill of the McDougall warriors. Then there is the family motto that drives home our passion and determination; ‘Vincere Vel Mori’, which means: win or die.” If you messed

with the McDougalls you probably didn’t live to tell the tale, and today, the coat of arms makes for great conversation in the pro shop. Wonder what those ancient

McDougalls would have given for a G-Mac by Kartel kilt in cashmere…
