Skymaster’s Midwest

Regional Float Fly

Two days of late summer float flying fun in southeast Michigan!

By Greg Cardillo PHOTOGRAPHY: GREG CARDILLO O 26

n the second weekend of Septem- ber, pilots in Southeast Michigan take to the water with their R/C creations for a two-day event. The Midwest Regional Float Fly celebrated its 22nd year in 2012, hosted by the Sky- masters R/C Club of Michigan. The venue is Island Lake Recreation Area in Brighton, MI on the beach of Kent Lake. One thou-

sand feet of sandy beach and a 40-acre lake for takeoffs, landings, and overflight pro- vides plenty of room for models—and full scale aircraft. I’ve had the privilege of run- ning this event from 2005 through 2010, but this year was my chance to attend as a participant and photographer for FLYING MODELS. Dave Wendt (Lake Orion, MI) was the Event Director for this year, and Dave

Shea was the Master of Ceremonies. Skymasters arrived on Friday and spent the day setting up the venue—cordoning off the pit area and flight lines, and erecting tents. Mother Nature threw a curve ball Saturday with the weather, with winds up to 30 mph and cool temperatures. While at- tendance was lower, over 40 pilots braved the conditions and got some flying in.
