Finally, work is continuing with New Zealand-based LanzaTech, on “a world- first low-carbon aviation fuel” using steel waste gases to produce a fuel with roughly half the total lifecycle carbon content of kerosene. Harvey says: “LanzaTech is on track to deliver commercial quantities of sustain- able aviation fuel in the next couple of years, offering 60% carbon savings. This is a big step, and we’re keen to be a pio- neer for the industry.” Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson describes the process as “one of the most exciting developments of our lifetime and a major breakthrough in the war on carbon”.

The fuel will be sustainable environ- mentally, as it has lower lifecycle carbon emissions and won’t cause deforestation; socially, as it won’t compete with staple food crops; and economically – “crucial- ly it will be available in viable quantities and at a comparable price to convention- al jet fuel”, Virgin says. While LanzaTech’s product is still on the horizon, the benefits of OSyS should


be felt immediately. Challenges remain however. Virgin says: “Ultimately the biggest challenges will be in changing processes, decision-making criteria and behaviours to be more conscious of fuel efficiency through our entire business and embedding that within our culture. “But we have outstanding teams across the operation, that are more than capable of rising to the challenge.”
