Let’s get physical 3

Is your nearest printer within arm’s reach or do you have to get out of your chair and walk to it? Not unsurprisingly psychologists from the University of Leeds have found that employees who do physical activity at work have lower blood pressure and resting heart rate than their idle colleagues. Although the findings may not come as a shock it might be enough to encourage you to make your working day as active as possible.

1

Start with your commute. Get on your bike, hop off the bus a stop

early or even strap on some rollerblades! 2

Rearrange your surroundings so that you have to move about to

reach files, or items you use regularly. IN BRIEF

FLEX IS KEY Three out of five workers across the globe say they don’t need to be in the office to be productive. A report from Cisco revealed that flex- ibility is more highly valued than an increased salary.

HOW TO GET A PROMOTION Academic research has come to the conclusion that if a woman is hoping for a pro- motion or a payrise it’s more important for them to show likeability than competence.

HARASSMENT AT WORK Worrying figures from Reabur reveal that eight per cent of women feel sexually harassed at work, but less than half report it to someone for fear it would harm their career or would not be taken seriously.

DID YOU KNOW? Research from Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business has revealed that workers’ productivity levels increase as much as 40 per cent when they feel that their role contributes to the greater good, plus they are happier in their roles.

Organising your emails

Holiday hell – no not a dodgy hotel but the sinking feeling you get when you return back to work after a break. After all, it’s likely you’re going to be met with potentially thousands of emails to sort through on your return – generating lots of stress and long working hours. We receive more emails than ever before and if you fail to be productive about how you handle them you could be wasting valuable time. So how can you reduce the impact?

If you work in Outlook then set up some of the ‘Rules’. You can automatically move all emails to a

folder while you’re away so that you can identify them from older emails you’ve already dealt with or are cur- rently dealing with.

Set up an out of office with the dates you’re away. But also request emailers to update you the day

before you’re due back on outstanding issues – this will ensure the most important emails are at the top and can be dealt with quickly, while the office tea rota can wait.

Leave your email password with a colleague and ask them to check your emails periodically if they

have a few spare minutes. Even just 10 minutes a day could save you a couple of hours on your return.

Use your lunch break wisely, by doing a short class at the local gym or pounding the pavement.

Give the lift a miss and use the stairs instead.

Put a ban on emails if you can easily wander over to a colleague and speak to them in person.

Take a five minute break every hour or so and use it to walk up and

down the stairs.

Strap on a pedometer and set a daily target for how many steps you’ll aim to do and then make sure you meet it.

Change your printer settings so that you use a

colleague’s printer which is based across the other side of the office.
