Rewarding talent

What makes our Executive PA Magazine Award-winners great? We hear from the people they work with to find out

Executive PA Magazine: PA of the Year Dawn Carey Executive Assistant, National Friendly “Dawn has set the benchmark. She continues to demon- strate the same levels of enthusiasm and drive in 2010 and she continues to help me work more effectively. She is constantly brimming with ideas for enhancing our effectiveness as a business, our presence in the commu- nity and how we operate as an organisation. “She has been instrumental in setting up our

Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, ideas like ‘Big Cake Bake’ and getting colleagues to take photographs for our newly refurbished parts of our office. “Dawn goes beyond the remit of the traditional

Executive Personal Assistant and has proved herself indispensable, particularly in a time of significant chance in the organisation. She has been part of the change pro- gramme, helping promote the right behaviors and shap- ing the business culture with the executive team.” Richard Sear, Chief Executive

Newcomer of the Year Amie Watkins Senior Team Administrator, CH& Co “Every day is different and Amie is always up for the next challenge. Although only 25 years of age, she is never phased by anything and is always willing to get stuck in. “She has gained the trust and respect of the people

she works with and inevitably makes their life easier. Amie is a huge asset to CH&Co and without her support I’m sure our Senior Team would not be the organised, prepared and efficient team they are. “Amie joined us from a quantity surveying company with only seven employees so took quite a leap to join a company with 2,000 employees! She has transferred her skills well and learnt very quickly how to work within a larger organisation.” Rebecca Simpson, PA to the CEO

Best Organised Event Stephanie Mayo PA, Groupama Insurances “Stephanie works in our Manchester office as my PA, and has been recognised for her work running the annual dinner for the Insurance Institute of Manchester (IIM). “The event that Stephanie organises is a major local

insurance event. Due to her hard work and great organi- sational skills, it has returned increased profits for the IIM. This has allowed them to offer free development events for the Manchester market and also make increased contributions to the Insurance Charities. “I actively support Stephanie’s involvement in the local institute, and the award was very well deserved.” Ann Beswick, Head of Underwriting Service Centre

Boss of the Year Laura Ellis Head of New Media, BBC “One of Laura’s greatest skills is in allowing people to own their jobs and take responsibility within each task. This has given people much encouragement to spread their wings and develop skills they probably didn’t know they had. “She is fiercely proud of the team around her and what they produce and is always quick to give praise and credit where due. She makes sure that no-one along the way is left out when they have contributed to an idea, project or other piece of work. “Laura is also a compassionate manager, and because

of that we all go many steps further than we have to, to deliver the best outcomes for all. In short, she runs a com- petitive, ambitious and highly creative team with flair, honesty and generosity of spirit which is second to none.” Gill Thompson, PA

Employer of the Year Hays plc “Hays is a fantastic place to work especially for PAs! Within Hays we have our own internal PA network, which includes bi-monthly Lunch & Learn session where we network and train together. Hays has also provided us with the budget for our first ever PA Conference. “There are clear progression routes for us since the PA

network was founded so we can clearly see how to reach Executive PA level or move onto other areas within the company. Directors within the company have become hugely supportive and are actively encouraging their PAs to undertake personal and professional development. “There really isn’t a better pace for PAs to be working

right now than Hays.” Sara Pautz, PA to Group FD E
