Pay day blues
Equal pay for women should be an issue that few people have to fight but sadly, according to a report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission progress on the matter is “grind- ing to a halt”. The average wage gap between the sexes is 16.4 per cent for full time workers, hitting 27 per cent for women over the age of 40. For female workers with no quali- fications the gap they faced was a massive 58 per cent loss of earnings over their working life as a result of maternity leave, while for those with a degree it was a four per cent loss.
CAREER DOCTOR
Q: My friend and I are both up for the same promotion. How should we handle this?
A: It’s important to sit down and speak to your friend honestly about this. After all, whoever gets the job will want the support of their friends and co-workers in their new role. If you’re lucky enough to land the role then seek out your friend to say you hope it won’t affect your personal or working relationship. Explain that the new role may mean you’ll be required to make unpopular decisions but that these decisions will be based on what is best for the company and would not be personal. Depending on the seniority of the role you may feel you need to stop the usual lunchtime drinks with staff – but if this is the case then ensure you still make time for your friend outside of work. Managing a friend can be tough – but if you remain friendly, honest and open you’ll have a better chance of getting your friend on side.
Flexible move for parents
From April next year working parents will have extended rights to request flexible working. At present the right to request flexible working patterns is available for parents with children under the age of 17, but now it will include those working parents who have children under 18. But for employees who are not parents there is also a glimmer of hope – the Government has announced it will be launching a consultation before the end of the year to examine extending the right for flexible working to everyone.
