ideas to make your first day and the days to follow go more smoothly.

Be prepared Your family may start getting

ready for school days or weeks in advance.You might buy or gather school supplies and check to see which clothes you’ve outgrown.

• The day or night before school

starts, Assemble your supplies. Organize your backpack and make sure it’s not too heavy to carry. (Remember, always carry it with both straps so you don’t hurt your back.)

• Be on time. Set your alarm clock to wake you with plenty of time for breakfast and getting ready. Give yourself enough time to walk or ride to school.

The Mini Page provides ideas for websites, books or other resources that will help you learn more about this week’s topics.

On the Web: • http://kidshealth.org/kid/feeling/school/back_to_ school.html

At the library: • “Pinky Dinky Doo: Back to School Is Cool!” by Jim

Jinkins • “Back to School, Mallory” by Laurie B. Friedman

TM • Lay out Clothes to put on in

the morning.You might want to choose a favorite outfit or accessory for the first day.

• Develop a schedule with your brothers and sisters for using the bathroom and having breakfast. If you work out a system in advance, there will be fewer fights about time spent getting ready. Your parents can help you make a plan.

OK, IT’S YOUR TURN NOW!

When you arrive •Be Energetic about learning.

When the teacher calls on you, ask questions and make helpful comments. Share an experience you’ve had that relates to the subject. For instance, if you’re studying your state’s history, tell about a tour you took of the state capital.

• Have Fun! Even if you’re nervous about your first day, you’ll find it goes quickly. Chances are you won’t be able to wait for Day 2!

• Give new classmates and teachers a chance. Sometimes it’s hard to get used to changes, but most of the time things turn out well. Make a new friend!

© 2010 Universal Uclick Welcome, Students! A New School Year

Many kids start back to school in August. Are you getting ready for your first day? The Mini Page talked with an elementary school principal to learn how kids can start the year off right.

Ready to learn A good student comes to school

ready to learn. But what does that mean?

Good students: • are able to listen and concentrate;

• can communicate

well with the teacher and other students;

The first day… Most kids are nervous on the first

day of school. It helps to remember that you’re not alone—it’s the first day for all the other kids, too. You can make the day easier for yourself and others by: • smiling and being positive; • asking new kids questions about themselves and showing them around; • having friendly “body language.”

Look others in the eye and show interest in what they say. Try not to look at the floor or cross your arms.

…for teachers, too This is the first day of school for

your teacher, too.He or she may be nervous about this new class of students. You can help

your teacher by: • introducing yourself; • raising your

hand before talking; • showing respect. Follow classroom rules and offer to help with chores.

I WONDER IF I’LL KNOW ANY KIDS IN MY CLASSROOM?

I WONDER IF THERE WILL BE HOMEWORK?

I HOPE MY TEACHER LIKES ME!

WILL I BE ABLE TO FIND MY ROOM?

WILL SCHOOLWORK BE HARD?

WHAT IF I CAN’T FIND THE LUNCHROOM?

I HOPE MY NEW CLASSMATES LIKE ME!
