equals 16.” “Who agrees?” The girls all give the
thumbs up. “And what is half of 16?” the teacher asks. Again, Kanyia struggles. “Seven-
teen?” she guesses. Pointer works her through the
problem. “Ohhh!” Kanyia says finally. With five minutes left before lunch,
Pointer calls the students into a circle on the carpet for a quick counting les- son. Kanyia suddenly breaks in. “Hey,” she says, surveying the group. She has an epiphany. “Four of us are standing, and four of
us are sitting. That’s half of eight.” Pointer hesitates, deciding not to
chide the student for interrupting. In- stead, she asks Kanyia to elaborate. “There are eight girls in the class, and half of us are standing. That’s four, be- cause four is half of eight,” she says. “Excellent observation,” Pointer re-
sponds, allowing a rare, fleeting smile. “Kiss your brain three times.” Kanyia kisses her fingertips and touches them to her forehead three times. She an- swers her teacher’s smile with a broader one.
