importance of education
But there are other important education options available to industry professionals that shouldn’t be ignored, education events that are tailored specifically for professionals. Some manufacturers run training programs specifically in using their product, such as Ranger, who has a 3-day Ranger University program that graduates “Fully Certified Ranger Educators”.
For a chance to get hands-on training, using a variety of manufacturers’ products (usually the latest and sometimes even unreleased product), a trade show is the best education resource. The Craft & Hobby Association offers a schedule of manufacturer-sponsored workshops, but that is just a small part of the educational opportunities available at a trade expo. Don’t forget the education you can gain walking the expo floor, as well. Treat make-n-takes as “speed classes” that give you the opportunity to learn as much as possible, in a few minutes, about the new tools or products that you are using. Ask questions. Booth staffer’s are not just there to hand out order forms - they should be able to serve up a wealth of information about the company’s products, and how to use them if you ask.
Creative education is only part of your professional education, of course. Although it may not sound as fun to take part in, business education is just as crucial to your professional success. This is especially true if you are a business owner or freelancer.
Business education can cover many areas: marketing, press relations, management, finance, and a myriad of other topics that you need to know to run your business. Traditional ways to get business education include using resources like local colleges, reading books, and hiring consultants.
But business education is most effective, when it is tailored to the specific needs of the industry that you work in. That is where industry resources, like Scrapbook Business Magazine, Scrapbook Update, and the business seminars offered at the Craft & Hobby Association trade shows, fit in. While they may cover business topics that you can hear about elsewhere, they cover them from the unique perspective of the scrapbook industry, which makes them extra valuable to scrapbook businesses.
