s I sat down to write this, the last days of my daughter’s first grade year were ticking off the calendar. I remember those childhood days of heady anticipation of the summer break myself, along with the
usual vows to never set foot in a classroom again when I got done with the “necessary” education. Little did my young self know that education is an ongoing, lifelong process for any professional. I’ve perhaps learned more intensely in the second half of my life, than in the first half of my life - and the tests aren’t multiple choice now.
No industry stays stagnant. New knowledge and technology is constantly developed, and anyone who doesn’t keep up, will get left behind. In the scrapbook industry, there are several different kinds of education that professionals need to keep up with, and several ways to get that education:
Scrapbook industry professionals need to keep up their education as a participant in the hobby. Even if you aren’t actually a scrapbook hobbyist, having a broad knowledge of scrapbook products and techniques, gives you the background to draw on for everything from product development to marketing. Moreover, if you do work in the creative side of the industry, for instance as a designer or instructor, it is especially important to stay up on the latest techniques and products, to keep your work fresh and up-to-date.
Where can you get this education? The obvious answer is to get it where the consumers get it: conventions, local stores, and websites such as Big Picture Scrapbooking. Then of course there are a myriad of other options such as blogs, YouTube, and podcasts. All of these can offer up a sampling of new products and techniques.
