FIRE SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY

The tragic fire in the Lakanal House apartment block in the London borough of Southwark and the release of new frightening figures, showing annual insured fire losses growing by 16 per cent to £1.3bn, once again shines a spotlight on fire safety and fire-resistant building products such as glazing, attracting the attention of the authorities. Building fires are down by seven per cent, but alarmingly fatalities are up - by a staggering 13 per cent in residential occupancies.


The Regulatory Reform Fire


Safety Order (FSO) reminds us of the legal obligation placed on those responsible for fire safety design and installation. Implications are clear for designers, specifiers, suppliers and installers of fire-resistant products: responsibility and accountability extends throughout the design, manufacturing and supply chain rather than simply resting on the shoulders of the responsible person who owns or operates the building. It is extremely important that


building products, such as fire- resistant glazing, are specified in the most appropriate application and in the correct fire-resistant framed system. Curtain Walling transformation The external elevations of a 33yr 3 storey office building have been transformed by Structura UK Ltd. Pilkington’s Suncool brilliant blue, 6mm glazing has given Central House a fresh, clean, modern appearance. Structura replaced over 750 vision units with new dual seal, double glazing ranging from 3m h x 1700mm to 1300mm h x 2m. The old aluminium panels were replaced by over 900 double glazed spandrel panels in the same manner. Structura replaced all pressure plates, face caps and gaskets, & also aluminium coping panels and column claddings.An impressive feature of Central House is its new main entrance. Structura removed the old, manual swing doors and installed a new, high performance revolving door together with one automatic pass door and one manual door. The entrance has a 13.8mm thick laminated glass canopy, secured by stainless steel tie rods with powder coated fins. The glazed screens to the Health Club at the rear of the building were replaced and incorporate new doors and louver panels. Elsewhere, ten external doors were replaced, two within the courtyard, and nine full height external louver panels were removed and replaced.

Experts Television property presenter, Kristian Digby turned to Glazing Vision for the optimum natural light solution in his dream home.The amount of natural light the property could actually tap into was limited but Glazing Vision were able to integrate innovative rooflight designs to enhance the aesthetic qualities of the new property whilst fulfilling the practical objective. At the hub of new building High performance sealed units from FGI’s Everseal IG range featuring Thermo Plastic Spacer (TPS) warm edge technology have met the complex vision and spandrel glazing demands of the Haymarket Hub in Newcastle. Over 2,000m2 of glass were used in the production of the IG units combining high light transmission with advanced thermal insulation and a low g-value for reduced solar gain. FGI produced large panes of 12.8mm and11.5mm laminated glass up to 3000mm x 3000mm in size for the building’s ground floor. Click here to request literature


Glazing system reaches the heights A glazing system from Technal, was chosen for the acclaimed new visitor’s centre on Snowdons summit, the highest building in Wales and England & subject to wind speeds of more than 150mph & twice hurricane force, over 5m of rain each year & temperatures of -20°C. Large picture windows from Technal’s FXi65 casement suite were set into deep reveals in the cladding on the west elevation. This ‘wall of windows’ maximises the views from the summit.The 2.5m high x 2m wide fixed light windows were angled to reduce glare in the valley below and to provide a degree of solar shading to reduce heat gain inside.
