80 ROOFING, CLADDING & INSULATION
The sky’s the limit for green thinking The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh has extended its 70 acres of greenery with 1400m² of plants expertly installed at roof level. The project was completed using Alwitra single ply waterproofing membranes supplied by ICB (International Construction Bureau) Ltd. ICB was a perfect choice for the project, owing to its impeccable green credentials. The company offsets its relatively low carbon footprint through the services of CO2Balance. The roof is further protected by the high performance Alwitra Evalon V single ply waterproofing membrane, which having passed EN 13948 is root resistant and has a life expectancy of over twenty-five years.

Adding a touch of luxury Kingspan WoodTherm complete wall and façade system in Dark Brown was used to face parts of the West End Customer Services Centre in Benwell. The system’s strong, pleasing finish is supported by built-in regulation compliant insulation, making it suitable both practically and aesthetically for a whole range of buildings. Kingspan WoodTherm can only be installed as a secret fix system which allows a smooth façade with all panel fasteners hidden from
view. The cladding is extremely fast and simple to install, reducing build times, providing a rapid, weathertight envelope and taking the architectural façade off the critical path. Click here to request literature
High class insulation Celotex XR3000 insulation a consistently popular choice with architects and specifiers was specified as the roof insulation for the Burbo Point development. The 150mm thick polyisocyanurate (PIR) foil faced boards, with an R- value of 6.50, outperform many other insulators, including mineral wools. With such effective insulation per mm, it is ideal for minimising the shell thickness whilst ensuring that the building’s thermal envelope provides optimal energy efficiency. At Burbo Point, the Celotex insulation solution was used to maximise roof space in the stylish loft apartments for a more spacious and open effect.

A story of Golden Copper
An exciting copper alloy with a long-lasting, rich golden colour is available for architectural applications from Luvata. Nordic Royal is an alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc, which is very stable and keeps its golden shade. Nordic Royal has a thin protective oxide layer containing all three alloy elements when produced. As a result, the surface retains its golden colour and simply loses some of its sheen as the oxide layer thickens with exposure to the elements, as demonstrated by accelerated weathering tests.
