20 SUSTAINABILITY & ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Curtain walling is a mix of glazing and very shallow stone panels

Waste is another concern. The design team used the WRAP toolkit, which was also very new at the time of design. There was no particular target set by the client, so the team aimed for the WRAP baseline, and beat it by three per cent. One innovation is a machine that dries out food waste, which can then be used as fertiliser.
The architect used the BRE’s Green Guide to Specification on the project, and as many building products as possible are recyclable. Flooring however is of vinyl, rather than rubber which the architect would have preferred, and now specifies routinely. At the time the specification was written however, rubber was less widely used and therefore there was a price premium which was hard to justify.
The building has two levels of basement parking, but this was part of the land purchase deal and is public short-stay parking. It is not
for the building users, and the building has a green transport policy, with cycle parking and generous provision of showers.
Flexibility of use is often forgotten when thinking about sustainable design. But it is crucial, since otherwise buildings could be demolished well before the end of their usable life. At the Rosebowl, although the lecture theatres are designed for a very specific use, the rest of the building is as flexible as possible. It is designed on a very wide grid. So although at the moment it is quite heavily partitioned, these partitions could all be removed to create much more open spaces.
With this level of flexibility, and the high environmental performance, we can expect this building to still be in use, when other more obviously green buildings have long ago become obsolete.
