A first with seamless Solar shading library

Catching the eye in Monmouth

When designing the new extension to Nottingham Trent University’s Chaucer Building, Maber Associates chose to incorporate an innovative new external Solar Shading system, by Levolux. The ‘Infiniti Fin’ System has unique ‘invisible’ fixings to create a stable and seamless arrangement of Fins that appear to float in front of a building. The concealed fixings incorporate a patented stainless steel locking plate engineered to accept a range of Fins, with widths of up to 480mm. The ‘Infiniti Fin’ system is designed to support Fins with the maximum possible span and allow them to be cantilevered to extend beyond concealed support arms creating the illusion of ‘continuous’ Fins.

Making a welcome statement

A solid wood ceiling from Hunter Douglas projects division caught the eye in the new cricket pavilion at the Haberdashers independent school. The project includes a stunning suspended wood ceiling that twists through the full length of the building to match the complex corkscrew design of the roof structure. Hunter Douglas projects division developed a system where each of the wood panels was manufactured using a flexible dowel that enabled each panel to twist slightly along its length. The monolithic nature of the system gives an overall appearance of the ceiling rotating as you look from one end of the building to the other.Hunter Douglas linear wood ceilings are available in three profiles, open, closed and grid. A+for concrete repairs

EN 1504-compliant concrete repair systems from BASF Construction Chemicals (UK) have helped to rejuvenate Aldridge School as part of a £290K refurbishment. It became evident that prolonged moisture ingress had caused extensive corrosion and spalling of the concrete lintels and columns and concrete repair work was required. The repaired concrete elements were treated with a spray-applied coat of BASF’s Protectosil®

Harvesting the rain at University

Kingspan Water has supplied an Envireau system to the University of Huddersfield for its new £14 million Creative Arts Building. The Kingspan Envireau will collect rainwater water from the building’s roof, filter it and then pass it into a below- ground 45,000 litre rainwater holding tank. The water will then be pumped to a high level header/break tank within the building to service toilet flushing. Mains water is also delivered to the header/break tank independently of rainwater, to provide back-up if rainwater supplies are exhausted, or if electrical power is interrupted. Gerry Quinn of Envireau notes, “rainwater harvesting can bring significant cost savings”
