Guildford Education Campus scoops top honours in Brick Awards

A FLAGSHIP EDUCATIONAL CAMPUS IN SURREY HAS WON THE AWARD FOR THE BEST BRICKWORK IN BRITAIN. T

he new educational campus in Guildford beat off hundreds of competitors to take the prestigious

2009 Brick Awards, held at the Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel in London on 4th November. The Brick Awards is one of Britain’s most respected design competitions. Organised by the Brick Development Association, the annual contest provides the definitive showcase for what brick can do. This year, there were a record number of entries, with projects from across Europe and as far afield as Kuwait, India and Japan.

“The purpose of the awards is of course to recognise the very best, and because of the incredible diversity of the ways in which brick is being used today, the awards don’t just recognise the talents of architects and designers, they acknowledge the expertise of the contractors, the consistency of the house- builders, the quality of the manufacturers, the skills of the craftsmen, and indeed the inventiveness and imagination of all those who use the material,”

Comments Bob Allies, Chairman of the Judging Panel and partner, Allies and Morrison.

The educational campus won the newly created category for the Best Educational Building, as well as the Supreme Award – the BDA Building of the Year.

The campus comprises two buildings. The same brick is used on both buildings but the difference in treatment gives each building its own identity. The smooth fourth face of Pond Meadow contrasts with the deeply recessed openings of Christ’s College. The judges were struck by the way the architects, DSDHA, exploited the visual quality of the semi-glazed brick. The deep maroon tones of Ibstock’s Cottbus Special Format, appear almost silver when reflecting light. Both buildings are carefully detailed and skilfully built by Irvine Whitlock Ltd.
