begin to combine those different skills and explore various combinations in order to further your ability on a motorbike. You will then begin to develop a separate set of skills that become natural to you. As an off-road enthusiast, the most
prominent example that comes to mind is the hook slide. This is achieved by disengag- ing the clutch and using the rear brake and your body position in order to skid the rear wheel and quickly kick the back of the bike around 90 degrees or more. This can then be followed up with a blip of the throttle, modulation of the clutch, and a forward adjustment of your body position as you throttle the bike the other 90 degrees and head in the other direction. All of this is accomplished using basic techniques and combing them in different fashions, includ- ing the timing of each application. The more you combine different skills, the more ingrained those combinations become until they become second nature to you – allow- ing you to focus on other aspects of the ride, whether it’s the scenery or the next obstacle. The ability to string together combina-
tions of skill sets is the sign of a skilled and experienced rider; and as you improve in this area, your control and comfort on the motorcycle will continue to increase - which is perhaps one of the most reward- ing aspects of riding a motorcycle: self-improvement. There’s no one else you need to compare
to, to keep up with or to surpass except yourself. Because of that, each day on the bike, each situation and each obstacle, no matter how insignificant, becomes a way to challenge yourself and improve your skills on a consistent basis. Whether it’s balancing as long as you can
at a stoplight, executing a tight turn in a parking lot or lofting your front tire over a rise in the trail, there are opportunities along every ride to challenge yourself. If you put in enough time and energy, instead of producing a few off-key notes with your motorcycle, you instead will produce a symphony of skills that is not only beautiful to behold, but beautiful to experience as well!
