Obstacles at the third and final qualifier for the 2016 GS Trophy included (far left) a teeter-totter leading into a water trap pictured above, a balance beam (left) and a serpentine course (below).
the entry to the next challenge, riding a tight narrow zigzag between barrels in a fenced-in pen. After the barrels were a cou- ple of steep uphills and downhills, a sand trap, a line of partially buried truck tires and another rock garden. The final chal- lenge was a massive teeter-totter that led riders into a water trap. The competition was tough, and riders
repeatedly buckled under the stress. Once a major infraction was charged, the rider’s confidence would seem to evaporate, lead- ing to more carnage. Many simply choked. Esparza, the likeable local favorite who
finished second on Friday, went from being confident about winning to having a spec- tacular crash off the teeter-totter. He did not finish the event as a result of his crash. In the end, the winner was Dennis God-
win, a general contractor from Buena Park, Calif. Dennis has been riding since he was a kid, but found the GS lifestyle a couple of years ago and now describes it as the pas- sion of his life. A true gentleman, he opined
that Tiberio was a better rider, but the per- formances proved otherwise. Godwin over- came his jitters by tuning out the crowd and focusing on his bike, saying it was “me and my girl dancing.” Godwin joins east coast winner Charles
Lucht of Richmond, Va., and Tom Asher of Johnstown, Ohio, as the three-man GS Tro- phy Challenge team scheduled to compete in Thailand next summer.
