10 BMW OWNERS NEWS December 2015 By Chuck Manley #12106
AS 2015 COMES TO A CLOSE, ONCE AGAIN I’M ASKING MYSELF “Where did the time go?” It’s been said that time seems to pass the most quickly when you’re having a great time. I must have had a great time all year because 2015 sure went by fast! The number of activities MOA members could attend this past year
were almost countless and included Chartered Club events, dealer open houses, MOA Getaways, track days, rider training events and the Inter- national Rally in Billings, Mont. I was fortunate to be able to attend
numerous events and meet many of you. MOA members are the best and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversations. The diversity of our members continues to amaze me. Name any occupation and we
have members working in that field. The Owners News “Member Profiles” column pro- vides examples of this diversity. Attend any event and you’ll see the BMW motorcycles are as diverse as the folks that ride them. With every new model BMW comes the opportunity to introduce new people to the MOA and our riding activities. This year MOA hosted six Getaway events, five in the U.S. and one in Canada. These
events continue to grow in popularity and most were at maximum attendance. Interest- ingly, for over 50% of those attending, it was the first MOA event (including Chartered Club events) in which they had participated. Our goal for 2016 is to host 12 Getaway events and interact with even more MOA members. Besides being a diverse group of individuals, MOA members are also very generous.
Throughout the year you give your time and money to local and national charities. During our International Rally individual members and chartered clubs open their wallets to sup- port a local charity where the rally is being held. This year in Billings, we presented the children’s charity of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Yellowstone County with a check for over $17,000. You are indeed a very generous group of people! You read stories about “paying it forward” in the letters sent to the Owners News “Rider
to Rider” column. Members helping members with flat tires, mechanical problems and other issues. Sometimes on the road and other times at events. Break out a tool kit and time how long it takes to be surrounded by a host of experts willing to lend a hand. There have been many times I’ve heard a member helping another member say something like “I always carry one of these with me. I’ll give you this one. You help someone when you can.” Recently I experienced an unexpected “paying it forward” moment. I was riding alone
and stopped at a small town café for a late lunch. When I went to pay my bill, the cashier told me a lady had already paid my check. I explained there must be a mistake as I was just traveling through the area and didn’t know anyone. The cashier said the lady was just paying it forward. Paying it forward is good karma. Years ago I bought a BMW motorcycle, not knowing that it would forever change my
life. Julie and I are blessed to have met and become friends with so many of you over the years. You are our extended family. On behalf of the Board of Directors we send our warmest regards and best wishes to each of you this holiday season. Thank you for being a member.
