gan, 30 minutes or so from Ann Arbor, and over the years Gary has ridden his share of BMW motorcycles and admits to buying lottery tickets and every raffle he could find. He’s said that if he had saved all the money he’s spent on raffle tickets over the years, he could easily own a fleet of BMW motorcycles. This year, Gary turned over a new leaf.

He swore off buying any raffle tickets or sweepstakes entries, even staying away from church bingo. But that didn’t stop Joanne from surprising him with five R nineT MOA Foundation raffle tickets for their 38th wedding anniversary. Joanne’s gift paid off big time for Gary when his ticket was drawn as the winner of the 2014 R nineT Custom at the BMW MOA booth at the AIMExpo in Orlando, Florida. The reaction you get when you tell some-

one he or she just won a new motorcycle can vary from overwhelming excitement to sheer terror, but you usually expect a cer- tain amount of excitement. When I called Gary to let him know he won, the only reac- tion I got was a very reserved “Wow!” It wasn’t until the next morning that I realized I had called Gary in the middle of the Mich- igan vs. Michigan State football game, and given his proximity to the U of M, I can understand that his mind may have been somewhere else. Gary later confided that he was in com-

plete disbelief when he heard the news. He could only think about how he would have missed out if it weren’t for the generosity of Joanne. Congratulations Gary for being the big winner! But Gary isn’t the only winner in this

story. MOA members across the country will see nearly $100,000 from the R nineT raffle invested in rider safety, education and

training. In fact, the very next weekend after the R nineT drawing, the South Coast BMW Riders hosted a Foundation sponsored train- ing event at Walt Fulton’s Streetmasters train- ing center in southern California. With financial support from the BMW MOA Foun- dation, 29 South Coast club members were able to attend the Streetmasters Precision Cornering Workshop learning “practical techniques that can immediately be applied in the real-world.” The event was organized by club President

Danny Wassenaar. Funding was provided by the MOA Foundation through the Paul B. Scholarship program and reduced the price for training from $390 to only $62 for each South Coast BMW Rider! Nearly 20 percent of the club participated in the training event. Danny was actually at the drawing for the R

nineT and shared his motivation for organiz- ing the training weekend. He said that even though many club members had thousands of miles under their belts, it was clear that some skills get rusty with time. As the organizer of several club rides, he felt compelled to do something to ensure the safety of not only club members, but his friends. Congratula- tions Danny. You are a winner, too! In reality, training is a continuum of learn-

ing and not a one-time event at the beginning of your riding career. The Foundation would like to provide low cost or no cost training to every BMW MOA member who wants it— regardless of the skill level. However, if we are successful in our message that everyone needs training at all levels, the need for funding will also increase. As you close out the year, consider making

a year end donation to the MOA Foundation. Your gift, no matter how great or small, has a direct impact on the lives of BMW riders everywhere.

Some of you might even con-

sider friends, just like Danny. Visit bmwmof. org to make a direct donation or call the Foundation office at 205-821-7205. And, don’t forget to add a raffle ticket to your anniver- sary gift list.
