Different Approaches Interestingly, these sizes would not be considered large in the wind energy arena: “Wind defi nitely requires larger parts by a factor of 2 or 3,” Gottschalk said.

“The oil industry in general has taken a different approach than wind when related to the scaling of components,” said Gottschalk. “Even though horsepower requirements for fracking and other applications are high, it is generally accomplished through multiple smaller scale units operated in parallel. The wind industry scaling of larger and larger kW requirements has pushed the limits of the supply chain. Component size and design limitations are now close to being reached at the current ‘system scaling’.”
While a fair number of the systems Surface Combustion manufactures to service the oil & gas industry are delivered to gear makers, “the major- ity of the systems that the company manufactures,” Gottschalk said, “are installed at commercial heat treaters or gear box manufacturers servicing oil fi eld integrators.” And relying on a commercial heat

The life of the tools used to make gears can also have an impact. “Everybody, of course, wants their parts quicker,” Young said. “They want it cheaper, so consequently you have to push your tools harder. And because sometimes we are dealing in exotic ma- terials that are more diffi cult to machine, consequently the cutting tools don’t hold up as long. You have to use higher grade tool steel for cutting or even carbides. We’ve applied that material technology to the cutters and have even gone to carbide tools that allow us
