GEAR MAKING

Young noted that quality gears begin with good gear material, but that “besides having good materials you’ve got to have good manufacturing practices. Our primary products are for the aerospace industry so we apply those standards and manufacturing techniques to all the gears we make, whether it’s medical, industrial, racing vehicles, heavy con- struction or oil & gas.”

Using the Latest Technology Forest City Gear’s approach, Young said, is to manufac-
ture gears using the latest technology in order to provide products “that are recognized as high quality, delivered at a reasonable price and will last a long time and not break down.” This is particularly important, he noted, when the gears are operated in environments that have extreme temperatures and climatic conditions, such as saltwater and salt-laden air.
“The smallest part we make [for oil & gas],” said Young, “is down around 1/8" [3 mm] in diameter, and that’s used in a gas compressor. And then we’ve made some gears that are up around 25" [635 mm] in diameter.” ITAMCO (Indiana Technology and Manufacturing Com- panies; Plymouth, IN) is another gear maker that serves the energy industry. Joel Neidig, ITAMCO’s technology manag- er, detailed the many ways gears are used to produce oil & gas for Manufacturing Engineering’s Energy Manufacturing 2014 (
