There currently are eight manufacturing institutes in various stages of development. The Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act, or RAMI, was included in a $1.1 trillion omnibus spending bill that was signed into law by Obama in December. RAMI would establish as many as 15 manufacturing institutes. RAMI had been passed by the House in September but had been held up in the Senate. Under President Obama’s vision for the NNMI, the full manufacturing network would be developed over a decade and consist of up to 45 regional hubs of public-private part- nership, little Silicon Valleys of research and development for specific manufacturing technologies. Proponents say the institutes can combine expertise of companies and universities to make US manufacturers more competitive with overseas rivals.
3D Systems Acquires botObjects Introduces CubePro C

uring the International CES 2015 show in Las Vegas, 3D Systems (Rock Hill, SC) announced it has acquired UK- based 3D printer maker botObjects and plans to launch the CubePro C, a new desktop full-color 3D printer powered by botObjects’ technology.
3D Systems, which put the new full-color printer on dis- play at CES, did not disclose the terms of the transaction. botObjects pioneered the first 3D desktop printer using Plas- ticJet Printing (PJP) that offers true full-color 3D printing, signifi- cantly expanding the palette of possibilities for what designers, artists and engineers create, from prototypes to products. botO- bjects also invented a proprietary five-color CMYKW cartridge system, capable of mixing primary printing colors on the fly to generate vibrant color combinations and gradient transitions.
