EDM TECHNOLOGY

The EDNC8 is a larger sinker EDM machine from Makino Inc.

can reduce machining time by 10% compared to a conventional Mitsubishi Electric wire-cut EDM.

The MP1200 has a table dimension of 25.2 × 21.3" (640 × 540 mm) and can handle maximum workpiece weight of 1102 lb (500 kg). The MP2400 has a table dimension of 33.1 × 25.2" (840 × 640 mm) and a maximum workpiece weight of 3307 lb (1500 kg). The MP Series has a 15" (381-mm)

screen, with touch screen controls. MC Machinery “creates our own tech-

nology,” Bystrek said. “We can control the performance of the machine, not only from the speed standpoint, but the ac- curacy and repeatability.”

On the sinker EDM side, MC’s offerings include the EA12S CNC Sinker EDM and EA8S CNC Sinker EDM machines. The EA8S has a table of 19.7 × 13.8" (500 × 350 mm) and can handle a maximum workpiece weight of 1214 lb (546 kg). The EA12S has a table of 27.6 × 19.7" (700 × 500 mm) and can handle a top workpiece weight of 2200 lb (990 kg). According to MC, the machines can reduce wear on graphic electrodes by as much as 80%. The models also have touch screen controls the same size as the MP Series of wire EDM machines. “Customers are looking to EDM for production” parts,

Crownhart said. “You can do multiple parts, with much more ease of fi xturing. Put a robot on it and you can see how it can do multiple parts.”

EDM’s Future

EDM companies expect continued evolution of machines, including possibly combining EDM with other technology. “I think you may see other manufacturing processes integrated into an EDM machine or an EDM into another machine process,” said Belmont COO Ianitelli. “Customers want to handle parts as minimally as possible and rather than moving machine to machine you may see some crossover. Customers drive the market direction.” GF Machining and 3D printing company EOS agreed in July to jointly develop “exclusive solutions” for moldmakers.
