Advanced Joining and Forming Is Crucial for US Manufacturing

aterials joining and forming are essential cross- cutting technologies, contributing around $200 billion in value to US-manufactured products
annually. The automotive industry relies heavily on materials joining and forming technologies. So, too, do the aerospace, shipbuilding, power generation, electronics, and other industries. It’s not surprising that in 2012, the “Report to the President on Capturing Domestic Competitive Advantage in Advanced Manufacturing” identifi ed these technologies as “pivotal in enabling US manufacturing competitiveness, both in terms of differentiation and tradability of goods.” Other regions of the world have recognized the importance of join- ing and forming technologies to manufacturing competitive- ness. They have been proactively investing in research and development in joining and forming technologies while the US risks falling behind in the development of innovative join- ing and forming solutions.
Developing a Roadmap for Manufacturing EWI, a nonprofi t institute located in Columbus, OH, is leading the development of the fi rst comprehensive US Ad- vanced Joining and Forming Technology Roadmap under a two-year program funded by The National Institute of Stan- dards and Technology (NIST). The Roadmap is being de- veloped by canvassing leading US manufacturers engaged in materials joining and forming, academia, industry and professional associations and other stakeholders. These interactions will identify and rank current joining and forming challenges to develop a list of prioritized R&D topics that will create differentiating competitive advantages and pro- duce substantive economic impact. Information to support the roadmap is being collected via a state-of-art review of global technology trends, holding a series of expert focus group exercises across many manufacturing sectors, and conducting industry surveys and interviews with selected
