“We alter or customize 70% of our machines based on what the customer wants to accomplish,” Ianitelli said. “Twenty years ago, you might be waiting for the next model to be able to do something. Today, reaction is in real time. Yes, some things do need to be developed but once available we will integrate it for the customer.” Ianitelli also is high on EDM’s pros- pects, including increasing use of hard- to-machine metals.
“EDM does not distinguish materi- als based on their hardness as much as an end mill or even a grinding wheel would,” he said. “It is more concerned with the conductivity of the material. “As long as the proper steps are
taken preparing for a workpiece, you should see consistent results no matter the quantity.”
‘Very Consistent Result’ MC Machinery, part of Mitsubishi Electric, is active with both sinker and wire EDM machines. Mike Bystrek, the company’s wire
EDM product manager, said MC has moved to make the controls of its ma- chines easier to operate in part because of a shortage of skilled operators. “While there’s a lot of seasoned guys
out there, there are a lot of people who don’t have experience,” he said. As a re- sult, there’s a need for more automation with easy-to-use controls. “You almost need to press a button,” he said. Part of the increased technol- ogy involves maintenance and “the machine’s ability to adjust itself to maintain stability,” said Pat Crownhart, the sinker EDM product manager. “You used to have guys listening” to EDM machines to determine when adjust- ments and maintenance were needed. “Now, the machine does a lot of that work for you to maintain a very consis- tent result.”
