UP FRONTA LETTER FROM THE EDITOR All New for 2015: Look, Leadership & Industry u H
appy New Year! The fi rst thing I hope you notice about our fi rst magazine issue of 2015 is that it features an all-new design. We fi gured the start of the year was the perfect time to kick off our new look—which isn’t just window dressing. It’s really a refl ection of our new, expanded approach to manufacturing coverage. We’ve entered a high-tech era in manufacturing, and the
team here at Advanced Manufacturing Media—the publisher of Manufacturing Engineering magazine—wanted to refl ect that in our new look. The new tagline at the top of our cover sums it up well: Metalworking to 3D Printing. We also have some leadership changes to announce here
at SME. We’re welcoming a new CEO, Jeffrey M. Krause, to the helm, as well as a new director at Advanced Manufacturing Media, David O’Neil. In SME Speaks this month, you can read about how they represent part of a new team who, along with our current leaders, will be strengthening the future of SME. To be frank, the mission of SME—to inspire, prepare and support our stakeholders in the advancement of manufactur- ing—has never been more important. advanced education knows that. That challenge is a topic well covered in this month’s “Workforce Pipeline” article by Jean- nine Kunz, SME Managing Director, Workforce & Education. We here at Advanced Manufacturing Media are true believ- ers in SME’s mission because we recognize the stakes as very high. Manufacturing is absolutely core, vital, to our economy and, as a result, to strong communities. The shift in manufacturing toward advanced technologies, which depend on software, automation, sensors, lasers and other key areas of technological improvement, is a driving force in manufacturing’s resurgence in North America. It also happens to be more enticing to younger people, digital na- tives, considering a career in this fi eld. So, you’ll notice as you fl ip through the updated magazine this month that we’ve replaced our monthly Quality Scan col- umn with a new column entitled, “Advanced Manufacturing Now.” This column will address modern manufacturing tech- nologies, processes, materials, challenges and strategies. Please join us in celebrating an exciting New Year for manufacturing in North America — and don’t forget to renew your SME membership!
