Dream Pipes Don’t Have to Remain Pipedreams
P
ipes and tubes are basically pretty simple, straight- forward things—until you get beyond the basics. The complexities arise when you bend them, shape them, make them out of specialized materials, coat them and do a myriad of things that can be done to and with tubes and pipes. And many of these things are done to them so they can be used at power generating plants. These plants themselves have a short but complex list of objectives. They must operate with high effi ciency, produce little in the way of emissions and be constructed as frugally as possible—while still meeting the previous requirements. Pipelines at these facilities have an essential signifi cance in all these areas. On the one hand, tubes or pipes made of
wear-resistant and resilient material as well as small bending radii enhance the degree of effi ciency of power plants. On the other hand, lean tube bending processes and automated production lines themselves provide a signifi cant contribution to cost effi ciency in power plant construction. The higher the process temperatures of power plants, the higher their effi ciency. So that pipelines can resist temperatures of 600°C and more, high temperature- resistant steels such as T91 are increasingly being used. In comparison to normal steels, these have the required creep strength to resist the loads through pressure and fl ow values.
