TALLAHASSEE POLICE

MOTORCYCLES HELPED A FLORIDA POLICE DEPARTMENT SAVE MONEY AND STAY COOL.

DEPARTMENT HOW HARLEY-DAVIDSON®

SUBMITTED BY POLICEONE

SEEKING NEW MOTORCYCLES FOR THEIR FLEET, THE TALLAHASSEE, FL. POLICE DEPARTMENT FOUND SERVICE AND VALUE WITH HARLEY-DAVIDSON®

POLICE MOTORCYCLES

The Tallahassee Police Department has the distinction of being the third oldest Police Department in the U.S. Currently, they protect a city of 180,000 permanent residents in addition to a seasonal influx of thousands of tourists and also students attending Florida State University and Florida A&M University. The Tallahassee Police Department

motorcycle unit is made up of eight officers who patrol within the city limits. Their primary duties include traffic enforcement, investigating traf- fic injuries and deaths, and education.

PROBLEM In 2009, The Tallahassee Police Depart- ment needed to find an affordable and effective option for their motorcycle fleet. They were looking for a motorcycle manufacturer that would provide rea- sonable initial costs, low maintenance and high resale value. They also wanted to proceed with an option involving a local dealership that would be able to provide maintenance for their fleet. The department had specific techni-

motorcycle in

cal requirements for their motorcycles. The intense heat and humidity of the Tallahassee area provide unique chal- lenges to motorcycle officers.

SOLUTION The department examined sev- eral options before finally choosing Harley-Davidson®

Included were basic maintenance

classes at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Orlando, providing nec- essary skills for the fleet mechanic to keep their bikes on the streets and out of the garage. They also had the local Harley-Davidson®

dealership to rely on

for larger repairs. Having that work done by the local Harley-Davidson®

dealership also

maintains the resale value, which in turn means that when they cycle these motorcycles out, typically after a 24-month rotation, they’ll have a bigger sum to invest in the next line. The Harley-Davidson®

police motor-

cycles were a cost-effective option. Because of their strong resale value, the cost of purchasing new ones was offset by the price they received at auction.

RESULTS The Tallahassee Police Department has been pleased with the reduction in ownership cost that switching to Harley-Davidson®

police motorcycles

has provided. The quicker-to-replace and more convenient parts help the Tallahassee motorcycle fleet get back on the road quicker, so it can do its job of protecting citizens. “There’s no manufacturer that

stands by their product quite like Harley-Davidson” – Officer Tim Clark, Tallahassee Police Department.
