in the state. The Traffic Unit, including both Mounted and Motorcycle Officers, has long been a major component of the Department. Newark’s mounted patrols began in 1891 and their motorcycle patrols in 1907. Today, the Traffic Section includes four Mounted Offi-
cers and 17 Motorcycle Officers, including a Sergeant and a Lieutenant. Traffic officers are a highly visible component of
general patrol, traffic enforcement and community policing duties citywide, but especially within the core downtown district. The Newark Police Department utilizes a fleet of 2013 and 2014 Harley-Davidson®
Road King®
Police motor-
cycles. In 2011, the department reverted to their traditional, distinctive colors of black and “school bus chrome,” after two decades of utilizing white motorcycles.
